About

Daniel Malloy Tobin was born on October 19, 1910, in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he also attended the University of Cincinnati. He went on to become an American character actor whose career spanned stage, film, and television until his death on November 26, 1982, in Saint John's Hospital in Santa Monica, California, at the age of 72. Throughout his career, Tobin was frequently cast as gentle, urbane, and fussy figures, occasionally imbued with a concealed edge of malice or a streak of obsequiousness.

Tobin made his Broadway debut in American Holiday in 1936, launching a stage career that would take him across the Atlantic. He joined a touring company in England, where a performance in Ah, Wilderness! caught the attention of a theatrical impresario. That exposure led to two London engagements: Behind Your Back at the Strand Theatre in 1937 and Mary Goes to See at the Theatre Royal, Haymarket in 1938. Returning to Broadway, Tobin was cast as Alexander "Sandy" Lord in the original 1939 production of Philip Barry's The Philadelphia Story, completing his credited Broadway appearances between 1936 and 1939.

In film, Tobin earned particular recognition for his portrayal of Gerald, an overbearing secretary, in the 1942 feature Woman of the Year. He later appeared as the top-billed scientist in Orson Welles's television pilot The Fountain of Youth, filmed in 1956 and broadcast once in 1958 as part of NBC's Colgate Theatre; the production won a Peabody Award. His final film credit came opposite John Huston in Welles's The Other Side of the Wind, shot in the early 1970s and not released until 2018.

On television, Tobin held regular roles on I Married Joan, My Favorite Husband, Mr. Adams and Eve, and Where Were You? He made an appearance on Perry Mason in 1964, playing Dickens the butler in the episode "The Case of the Scandalous Sculptor," and in 1966 joined the series as a recurring character during its final season, portraying the proprietor of Clay's Grill. TV Guide credited him with 44 television appearances in total.

Tobin met film and television screenwriter Jean Holloway on the set of The First Hundred Years, and the two were married in 1951. They remained married until his death in 1982.
