About

Dan Lauria is an American actor born on April 12, 1947, in Brooklyn, New York. He is widely recognized for his television, film, and stage work spanning several decades, with Broadway appearances between 2010 and 2012.

Lauria attended Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven, Connecticut, on a football scholarship, where he first became involved in acting. He graduated in 1970 and subsequently served as an officer in the United States Marine Corps from 1970 to 1973. During his service in Vietnam, he was stationed as a platoon commander at An Loc, near the Cambodian border — a period of his life that paralleled the wartime experience of Jack Arnold, the character he would later portray in The Wonder Years, who served during the Korean War.

His early screen work included guest appearances on Scarecrow and Mrs. King, Hunter, Growing Pains, L.A. Law, and Cagney & Lacey, as well as roles in the films Stakeout (1987) and Another Stakeout (1993). Lauria became best known to television audiences through his portrayal of Jack Arnold, the father on the coming-of-age series The Wonder Years, which ran from 1988 to 1993. In 1996, he appeared as Commanding Officer, USA in Independence Day, and in 1998 he played NASA Administrator James Webb in the television miniseries From the Earth to the Moon. Additional screen credits include a 1997 episode of Boy Meets World, the AMC production The Three Stooges N.Y.U.K. (2000), and The Spirit (2008), in which he played Police Commissioner Eustace Dolan. He later appeared in Army Wives, The Mentalist, and Criminal Minds, where he played General Lee Whitworth, M.D. in season four. From 2012 to 2014, he played Jack Sullivan on the sitcom Sullivan & Son, and from 2016 to 2017 he portrayed Al Luongo on the drama series Pitch. In 2021, he starred in Wes Hurley's autobiographical dramedy Potato Dreams of America, and in 2024 he played Tip O'Neill in the Ronald Reagan biopic Reagan.

Before his Broadway work, Lauria appeared off-Broadway in New York in the summer of 2006 in A Stone Carver by William Mastrosimone, alongside Jim Iorio and Elizabeth Rossa. In late 2009, he returned to the off-Broadway stage playing Jimmy Hoffa in Brian Lee Franklin's Good Bobby, a fictionalized account of Robert F. Kennedy's rise.

Lauria made his Broadway debut in 2010 in Lombardi, a play in which he portrayed legendary NFL coach Vince Lombardi. His performance drew significant attention, and his depiction of Lombardi was incorporated into the NFL on FOX introduction to Super Bowl XLV, in which the Green Bay Packers — the team Lombardi had coached to victories in the first two Super Bowls in 1967 and 1968 — defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers. In 2012, Lauria returned to Broadway in A Christmas Story: The Musical, playing the role of Jean Shepherd. He reprised that role off-Broadway at Madison Square Garden in 2013.

Outside of his performing career, Lauria served one year as a Department of Veterans Affairs celebrity hospital visitor, during which he toured VA hospitals and met with patients.
