About
Dan Chameroy is a Canadian actor born on November 12, 1970, in Edmonton, Alberta. His parents enrolled him in tap dancing as a child, which sparked his interest in performing and led him to pursue plays, musicals, and improv. He has built an extensive career in musical theatre, primarily in Ontario, with credits spanning Stratford Festival, Mirvish Productions, the Shaw Festival, the Canadian Stage Company, and the Soulpepper Theatre Company. He appeared on Broadway in 2015 in Matilda the Musical.
Chameroy made his professional stage debut in the Canadian premiere of Les Misérables at the Royal Alexandra Theatre in Toronto, where he was a member of the ensemble and understudied the role of Enjolras between 1991 and 1992. It was during this production that he met Canadian actress Christine Donato, whom he later married; the couple have one daughter, Olivia. In 1995, he originated the role of Gaston in the Canadian premiere of Beauty and the Beast at the Princess of Wales Theatre, earning a Dora Award for Best Leading Actor for the performance.
His association with the Stratford Festival began in 1997 when he played Lancelot du Lac in Camelot, and he has since accumulated 29 productions there. Between 2002 and 2008, he appeared in 14 Stratford productions, taking on roles including Gaston Lachailles in Gigi, Posthumus in Cymbeline, and the lead role of Curly McLain in Oklahoma. In 2008, he starred as Martin Townsend in the world premiere of Palmer Park, written by Joanna Glass, at the Stratford Festival. In 2009, he played Miles Gloriosus in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum at Stratford, a production extended by a week due to popular demand, and he reprised the role when it transferred to the Canon Theatre in Toronto from December 15, 2010 through January 16, 2011. Later Stratford credits include Frank 'n' Furter in a 2018 production of The Rocky Horror Show, which was extended three times and became the longest-running show in Stratford's history, closing on December 2, 2018. The following year, he starred as Jackie Elliott in Billy Elliot the Musical and as Orin Scrivello in Little Shop of Horrors, both at Stratford.
Beyond Stratford, Chameroy appeared in Side by Side by Sondheim with the Canadian Stage Company in 2004 and starred in two Shaw Festival productions in 2006 and 2007, including the role of C.K. Dexter Haven in High Society in 2006. In 2014, he played Bobby in a production of Company, presented by Theatre 20 and the Canadian Stage Company, alongside Louise Pitre, Brent Carver, Nia Vardalos, and his wife Christine Donato. The production marked the first time the musical had played Toronto in 30 years.
Chameroy originated the role of Miss Trunchbull in the Canadian premiere of Matilda the Musical, which opened at the Ed Mirvish Theatre on July 5, 2016, and closed on January 7, 2017. He received a nomination for Outstanding Male Performance in a Musical for the role and subsequently reprised it on the first national tour of the show in 2017. In 2017, he also starred as Frank Carter in the world premiere of Life After, for which he received a nomination for Outstanding Performance (Male) in a Musical at the 2018 Dora Awards. In 2023, he appeared as Phil Sullivan and Antipholus of Ephesus in The Comedy of Errors at the Chicago Shakespeare Theater and performed as Count Carl-Magnus Malcolm in a concert staging of A Little Night Music at The Royal Conservatory of Music.
Chameroy co-created and has performed the character Plumbum in Ross Petty's annual holiday pantomime productions in Toronto. Modeled on the pantomime dame tradition, Plumbum is a female character performed in flamboyant costumes with an over-the-top comedic style that frequently involves ad-libbing and breaking the fourth wall. He first appeared as Plumbum in Petty's 2008 production of Cinderella and has since reprised the character in nine additional productions, including Robin Hood (2009), The Wizard of Oz (2011), The Little Mermaid (2013), Cinderella (2014), Peter Pan (2015), A Christmas Carol (2017), There's No Place Like Home For The Holidays (2020), Alice in Winterland (2021), and Peter's Final Flight (2022). In 2024, it was announced that Chameroy would return as Plumbum in a revival of The Wizard of Oz, to be presented and produced by the Canadian Stage Company.
In addition to his stage work, Chameroy has voiced characters in several animated series, including Monsieur LaFleur in the CBC Kids series Mittens and Pants, Briian in the YTV series Oh No! It's an Alien Invasion, Aunt Lydia and Dr. Gillman in the Disney Channel series Hotel Transylvania, and Kit in the PBS Kids series Work It Out Wombats. His television acting credits include a guest appearance as Kenny Dolan in the Fox drama series Class of '96 and the role of Theodore "Laurie" Laurence in the drama series Little Men, which aired between 1998 and 1999. In 2020, he co-created and starred in the Stratford Festival web series Leer Estates, in which he portrayed all of the characters in what has been described as an absurdist soap opera. He released a solo album, me, in 2003, comprising various musical theatre songs.
