About
Damita Jo Freeman is an American dancer and actress whose career spanned television, film, and Broadway. She began building her public profile through the television program Soul Train, where she became a featured dancer in 1973 following her second appearance on the show. That recognition came after Joe Tex invited her onstage during an unscripted, unchoreographed moment to dance to his song "I Gotcha." Her regular dance partner on the program was Don Campbell. Freeman's presence on Soul Train drew particular attention for her controlled yet fluid movement, and she became one of the show's most closely watched performers.
Her Broadway career ran from 1971 to 1978 and included three productions. She appeared in Two Gentlemen of Verona, the musical Candide, and Platinum.
Freeman also established a presence in film during the 1980s. Her screen credits include Private Benjamin in 1980, The Man with One Red Shoe in 1985, and Elvira: Mistress of the Dark in 1988.
