Dale Soules

Dale Soules is an American actress who grew up in the Greenwood Lake section of West Milford, New Jersey, where she attended West Milford High School. During her high school years, she developed an interest in acting through summer stock theater and singing in church choirs, and began formal training at HB Studio.

After graduating, Soules relocated to New York in the mid-1960s to pursue an acting career, initially taking on behind-the-scenes roles in theater before securing her first Broadway credit. That opportunity came in 1968, when she was cast as Jeanie in the original Broadway production of Hair. Her Broadway career extended through 2013 and included roles in Dude, The Magic Show, The Crucible, and Hands on a Hardbody. She spent four years performing in The Magic Show during its run.

Beyond Broadway, Soules has appeared in additional stage productions including Grey Gardens, and has worked in film and television. She is known for her role in The Messenger and for portraying Frieda Berlin in the Netflix series Orange Is the New Black. She joined the cast during the show's second season in a recurring capacity and was elevated to series regular beginning with the sixth season, a role she held through 2019.

Soules is openly lesbian.
