About

Diana Dale Dickey is an American character actor born in Knoxville, Tennessee, who has built a career across theater, film, and television spanning several decades. She attended Bearden High School, where she performed in school productions including the role of Emily in Our Town. Dickey enrolled at the University of Tennessee in 1979 and studied there until 1984, when she left to pursue acting professionally. On December 10, 2015, she returned to the university to deliver the commencement address to fall graduates and received an honorary Master of Fine Arts degree from the institution.

Dickey's professional stage career began with the 1989 Broadway production of The Merchant of Venice. She subsequently appeared in a 2009 stage adaptation of A Streetcar Named Desire as well as productions of Sweeney Todd, in addition to work in off-Broadway and regional theaters. Her stage work in Los Angeles earned her two Ovation Awards.

Her screen career began in television, with a recurring role as Opal McHone in the CBS historical drama Christy from 1994 to 1995. Her film debut came in 1995 with The Incredibly True Adventure of Two Girls in Love. Early television credits also included supporting parts in the television movies Cagney & Lacey: Together Again (1995), Prison of Secrets (1997), and Christy: Return to Cutter Gap (2000). In 2000, she played Glyndora Roberts in the independent comedy film Sordid Lives, a role she reprised in the Logo sitcom Sordid Lives: The Series (2008), before returning to the franchise in A Very Sordid Wedding (2017) in a different role. Additional film credits from the 2000s include The Pledge (2001), Our Very Own (2005), and Changeling (2008). During this period she also guest-starred in numerous television series, among them The X-Files, Frasier, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Gilmore Girls, The Closer, and Ugly Betty. From 2005 to 2009, she held a recurring role as Patty the Daytime Hooker in the NBC comedy series My Name Is Earl, and in 2009 appeared in a recurring capacity on the AMC drama Breaking Bad.

Dickey's performance as Merab in the 2010 independent drama Winter's Bone, opposite Jennifer Lawrence, marked a turning point in her film career. The role earned her the Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Female in February 2011. She followed that film with appearances in J. J. Abrams's science fiction film Super 8 (2011) and Shane Black's Iron Man 3 (2013). She also appeared in the Bonnie and Clyde: Dead and Alive miniseries in 2013, took a recurring role in the FX series Justified in 2014, and portrayed Rose Gray in the Spanish-American thriller Regression (2015), alongside Ethan Hawke and Emma Watson. Further film credits include Hell or High Water (2016), Leave No Trace (2018), Bloodline (2018), and Flag Day (2021). On television, she played Martha Bozeman in the fifth and sixth seasons of HBO's True Blood from 2012 to 2013, appeared as a regular cast member in the second season of the HBO dark comedy Vice Principals in 2017, co-starred in the Netflix miniseries Unbelievable in 2019, and held a recurring role in Amazon's 2022 comedy series reboot of A League of Their Own. From 2017 to 2022, she played Juanda Husser in the TNT comedy-drama series Claws.

In 2022, Dickey took the leading role in the romantic drama A Love Song, which critics noted represented the first lead film role of her career. The performance earned her the Chlotrudis Award for Best Actress and nominations for the Independent Spirit Award for Best Lead Performance and the Gotham Independent Film Award for Outstanding Lead Performance. That same year she also played a leading role in the Irish drama The Cry of Granuaile. In 2023, she was cast in the Paramount+ western series Lawmen: Bass Reeves, the Amazon series Fallout, and the crime thriller The G, written and directed by Karl R.
