About
Dagny Servaes (10 March 1894 – 10 July 1961) was a German-Austrian actress who worked in both stage and film. Born in Berlin to Martha (née Haese) and Franz Theodor Hubert Servaes, she built a career that spanned several decades and encompassed roughly sixty film appearances as well as significant theatrical work, including productions staged by Max Reinhardt and Berthold Brecht.
Servaes began appearing on screen as early as 1917, when she took a role in the propaganda film Dr. Hart's Diary. Through the 1920s she appeared in a succession of films, among them The Loves of Pharaoh and Peter the Great (both 1922), Adam and Eve and The Tales of Hoffmann (both 1923), and Carlos and Elisabeth and Modern Marriages (both 1924). Further screen credits from that decade include In the Name of the King, Remembrance, Colonel Redl, Fadette, The Student of Prague, Grand Hotel, and The Weavers. While her earliest film work placed her in lead roles, she transitioned into supporting parts as her career continued. In 1938 she provided the voice of the evil queen in a German-language dub of Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs produced for the Austrian market. Her film work extended into the postwar period, with credits including Eroica and Night of the Twelve (both 1949), Maria Theresa (1951), and Daughter of the Regiment (1953).
Her Broadway career took place between 1927 and 1928, during which she appeared in four productions. In December 1927 she played Hippolyta in A Midsummer Night's Dream and took the role of Lechery in Jedermann, a run that continued into January 1928. That same month she appeared as Julie in Danton's Tod. She also appeared on Broadway in Peripherie, in which she played Anna.
Servaes was born into a family with notable connections across several fields. Her father's side of the family included Vice Admiral Reginald Servaes, to whom she was related through her father. Her brother Roderich Servaes had a son, Arnim, who pursued a career as a stage actor. With Erwin Goldarbeiter, Servaes had a daughter, Evi Servaes, who went on to work as an actress in both film and on stage.
