Sidney D. Mitchell was born on June 15, 1888, in Baltimore, Maryland, and went on to work as a lyricist, composer, and screenwriter across both the stage and the Hollywood film industry. He died on February 25, 1942, in Los Angeles, California.

Mitchell appeared on Broadway in 1918 in the musical You Know Me Al!, marking his presence in the New York theatrical world during that period.

His career later centered on the Hollywood film industry, where he became known primarily for his work as a lyricist and composer. He collaborated frequently with Lew Pollack on film scores for Twentieth Century Fox during the 1930s and 1940s. Mitchell also worked alongside Louis Alter, and together they received an Academy Award nomination in 1937 for the song "A Melody from the Sky," which appeared in the 1936 motion picture The Trail of the Lonesome Pine. He contributed multiple songs to the 1936 film Sitting on the Moon. In addition to his songwriting work, Mitchell served as a screenwriter on three films, including Umpa in 1933, for which he also provided the story.
