About

Cy Howard was an American director, producer, screenwriter, and Broadway performer born on September 27, 1915, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where he attended Washington High School.

Howard made his Broadway appearance in 1944, performing in the drama Storm Operation. His career extended across multiple entertainment mediums, and he became widely recognized for creating My Friend Irma, a radio situation comedy that achieved top ratings and ran for an extended period, eventually expanding into a broader media franchise.

He spent nine years working at CBS before departing in 1953 following a contract dispute. The network had offered him compensation exceeding one million dollars to be paid over a period of years, but the agreement required that Howard grant CBS exclusive rights to his work, a condition he declined to accept.

Howard's television work earned him a Primetime Emmy Award in the category of Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series for his contributions to The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour.

He died on April 29, 1993, of heart failure at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California, at the age of 77.
