Born Seymour Kaufman on June 14, 1929, in New York City to Max and Ida Kaufman, Cy Coleman made his Carnegie Hall debut at age 7. He went on to attend the High School of Music and Art and the New York College of Music. Among his collaborators were Joseph Allen McCarthy, Carolyn Leigh, Dorothy Fields, Betty Comden, Adolph Green, A.E. Hotchner, and David Zippel. He married Shelby Coleman; together they had a daughter, Lily.

Film credits include "Hocus Pocus," "Father Goose," "Sweet Charity," "Family Business," "Power," "Ride to Hangman's Tree," "Garbo Talks," "The Art of Love," and "The Troublemaker." On television, his work appeared in "Midsomer Murders," "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson," "The Girls Next Door," and "Great Performances."

Cy Coleman earned a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing in a Comedy-Variety or Music Special for "Shirley MacLaine: If They Could See Me Now" in 1975, followed by a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Special - Comedy-Variety or Music for "Gypsy in My Soul" in 1976. The Songwriters Hall of Fame inducted him in 1981, and the American Theatre Hall of Fame followed in 1991. He also received the ASCAP Foundation Richard Rodgers Award for lifetime achievement in American musical theatre.

On November 19, 2004, the marquees of Broadway theaters were dimmed in his honor.
