About

Curt Conway (May 4, 1915 – April 10, 1974) was an American actor born in Boston, Massachusetts who performed on Broadway between 1936 and 1960. He was occasionally billed under the names Curtis Conway or Kurt Conway.

Conway's stage career included appearances in several notable Broadway productions, among them Johnny Johnson, The Time of Your Life, Five Alarm Waltz, A Memory of Two Mondays, and A Touch of the Poet. Beyond the stage, he took on small roles in film, including a part in Hud (1963), and worked in television from 1960 until his death.

His professional development was shaped by membership in two significant theatrical organizations: the Group Theatre and, later, the Actors Studio. In 1952, Conway channeled that experience into founding his own institution, the Theatre Studio, situated at 353 West 48th Street in Manhattan. The school's faculty included Nora Dunfee, Robert Alvin, Lonny Chapman, and David Pressman, with Chapman and Pressman also being fellow members of the Actors Studio. Directors who participated in the school's programs included Martin Ritt, Alan Schneider, and Joseph Anthony, all connected to the Actors Studio, as well as Horton Foote and Everett Chambers. During the late 1960s and into the early 1970s, Conway taught acting at the School of Performing Arts in San Diego and at the University of California, Irvine.

Conway was married three times. One of those marriages was to actress Kim Stanley, which lasted from 1949 to 1956 and produced one daughter. He died of a heart attack in Los Angeles, California on April 10, 1974, at the age of 58.
