About
Crystal Lynn Bernard, born September 30, 1961, in Garland, Texas, is a retired American actress, singer, and songwriter. The daughter of televangelist Jerry Wayne Bernard and teacher Gaylon Fussell, she began performing at an early age, singing gospel music alongside her older sister, Robyn Bernard (1959–2024), who was also an actress. A recording of the two sisters survives from 1969, a song titled "The Monkey Song" featured on the album Feudin' Fussin' and Frettin', captured during a 1972 Thomas Road Baptist Church service led by Jerry Falwell when Crystal was eight years old. She also has two younger sisters, Scarlett and Angelique Bernard. Bernard trained as an actor at the Alley Theatre while growing up in Houston, Texas, attended Spring High School, and went on to study acting and international relations at Baylor University.
Bernard entered prime-time television with a recurring role as K.C. Cunningham on Happy Days during its tenth season in 1982–83, appearing alongside co-star Ted McGinley, with whom she had also worked in the 1982 film Young Doctors in Love. Following various guest appearances on other series, she joined the cast of the syndicated revival of It's a Living from 1985 to 1989, playing waitress Amy Tompkins. In 1987, she starred in Slumber Party Massacre 2, a Roger Corman-produced horror film directed by Deborah Brock. She also appeared in a 1989 television pilot titled Chameleons, created by Glen A. Larson, in which she played Shelley, a self-described crazed heiress investigating the murder of her eccentric millionaire uncle. That same year, she appeared in the music video for "Birdhouse in Your Soul" by They Might Be Giants.
Bernard's most prominent television role came with the NBC sitcom Wings, on which she played Helen Chappel Hackett, an airport lunch counter operator and cellist, for the show's entire eight-season run from 1990 to 1997. In 1999, she starred in the television movie To Love, Honor and Betray opposite David Cubitt and James Brolin. Her later film work included roles in Jackpot (2001), two Hallmark Channel productions — Single Santa Seeks Mrs. Claus (2004) and its sequel Meet the Santas (2005) — as well as starring roles in Welcome to Paradise (2007) and Grave Misconduct (2008), which marked her final acting credit before retirement.
On stage, Bernard appeared on Broadway in the 1999 revival of Annie Get Your Gun at the Marquis Theatre, where she was the last in a succession of actresses to portray Annie Oakley, with her run extending into 2000. Her other theatrical work included a 1999 Los Angeles production of Crimes of the Heart and the 2005 West Coast premiere of Barbra's Wedding at the Falcon Theatre in Burbank, California, in which she starred opposite playwright Daniel Stern.
Alongside her acting career, Bernard pursued music as a singer-songwriter. She released two studio albums, The Girl Next Door in 1996 and Don't Touch Me There in 1999, the latter containing a gospel track recorded with her father and a duet with country artist Billy Dean. She co-wrote "Come To Me," which appeared on the 1993 debut album by Angie & Debbie Winans, and co-wrote "If I Were Your Girl" with Rhett Lawrence for Paula Abdul's 1995 album Head over Heels. Bernard recorded a duet with Peter Cetera titled "(I Wanna Take) Forever Tonight," released on Cetera's 1995 album One Clear Voice; the single reached No. 22 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart and No. 86 on the Hot 100. She also recorded a duet with Jim Messina titled "Watching the River Run."
