About

Crahan Denton (born Arthur Crahan Denton; March 20, 1914 – December 4, 1966) was an American actor who worked across stage, film, and television throughout a career spanning more than two decades. Born in Seattle, Washington, he was the son of Arthur P. Denton, a New York native, and May Denton, née Graham, who was born in Montana. The family later relocated to Piedmont, California, a city surrounded by Oakland. In his professional life, Denton dropped his given first name and performed under his middle name, Crahan — an Irish surname carried within his family — pronounced "kran."

Denton pursued formal training in drama at the University of California, Berkeley, where he was also active in Little Theater productions. He subsequently moved to New York City and continued his studies at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre. His Broadway career extended from 1939 to 1958 and encompassed a range of productions, including Key Largo (1940), Liberty Jones (1941), Fragile Fox (1954), Bus Stop (1955), Orpheus Descending (1957), and Winesburg, Ohio (1958). His performance in Bus Stop earned him an Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Performances in Supporting Roles for the 1954–1955 season.

Beginning in 1945, Denton built a parallel career in film. His screen credits include The Great St. Louis Bank Robbery (1959), which featured Steve McQueen in his first leading film role, The Parent Trap (1961), Birdman of Alcatraz (1962), and Bus Riley's Back in Town. Among his most recognized film appearances was his portrayal of Walter Cunningham in To Kill a Mockingbird (1962). Cunningham is a client of attorney Atticus Finch and the leader of a mob that attempts to lynch another of Finch's clients.

Denton was also a frequent presence on television. In May 1952, he played Abraham Lincoln in an episode of American Inventory that served as a preview for a proposed series pilot. In 1960, he co-starred in an unsold pilot called Mountain Man, set at a Rocky Mountain fur trading station in the 1840s. His guest appearances spanned numerous series, including Bonanza, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Gunsmoke, Have Gun Will Travel with Richard Boone, The Fugitive with David Janssen, The Donna Reed Show, and two episodes of the CBS courtroom drama Perry Mason.

Denton married Eleanor Brown in New York City in 1955. He died on December 4, 1966, following a heart attack in Piedmont, California, at the age of 52.
