About
Courtenay Foote (22 November 1878 – 4 May 1925) was an English actor who worked in both stage and silent film, appearing on Broadway between 1909 and 1922. He was born in Harrogate, West Riding of Yorkshire, and died in Italy.
Foote's path to acting was neither direct nor conventional. He attended Oxford, studied engineering in Germany, and subsequently worked as a civil engineer in Scotland. When friends who heard him recite blank verse urged him toward a theatrical career, his grandfather objected, and Foote set the idea aside, becoming a broker instead. His limited success in that profession eventually caused his grandfather to withdraw his opposition, clearing the way for Foote to pursue the stage.
His entry into acting came through an introduction to F. R. Benson, for whom Foote auditioned by reciting blank verse. He spent eighteen months performing with Benson's troupe, advancing from smaller parts to more substantial roles. He subsequently appeared in London at the Haymarket Theatre, the Court Theatre, and the Shakespearean Festival. His American debut came in The Debtors, in which he played Arthur Clenham in New York, a production that was followed by a touring engagement.
Foote's Broadway career encompassed productions including The Fires of Fate, Oliver Twist, Upstairs and Down, Adam and Eva, and The Lady Cristilinda. In 1911 he appeared on stage alongside George Arliss in the long-running play Disraeli.
Repeated visits to Vitagraph Studios deepened Foote's interest in motion pictures, and his film debut came in the initial Captain Barnacle production. He went on to work for Reliance and Majestic studios, ultimately appearing in 59 films between 1910 and 1924.
