About
Constance Ford, born Cornelia Marie Ford on July 1, 1923, in the Bronx, New York, was an American actress and model whose career spanned stage, film, and television across more than four decades. Her parents were Cornelia R. (née Smith) and Edwin J. Ford, and she grew up alongside siblings Arthur, John, and Evelyn. Ford completed her education at St. Barnabas Grammar and High School and attended Hunter College before studying acting at HB Studio in New York City.
Ford's professional life began in modeling. At fifteen she worked for the Montgomery Ward catalog, and in 1941 her face appeared in an Elizabeth Arden advertising campaign for Victory Red lipstick, photographed by Philippe Halsman with her face set against the American flag. Her stage career brought her to Broadway, where her credits included the 1928 musical The Madcap as well as later productions such as the musical Say Darling, Nobody Loves an Albatross, and the original Broadway production of Death of a Salesman, in which she played the prostitute.
Ford launched her television career in 1950, performing in live dramatic programs including Studio One, Armstrong Circle Theatre, and Goodyear Television Playhouse. Her soap opera work began in 1954 when she debuted as Lynn Sherwood on the CBS series Woman With a Past. She subsequently appeared on Search for Tomorrow as Rose Peterson, a mob employee assigned to discredit leading character Joanne Tate, with Don Knotts playing her on-screen brother. On The Edge of Night she portrayed the murderous theatre owner Eve Morris.
As a Warner Bros. contract player, Ford appeared in nearly two dozen films between 1956 and 1974. Her most prominent film role came in A Summer Place (1959), in which she played Helen Jorgenson, the matriarch whose abused husband, portrayed by Richard Egan, confronts her for her outdated prejudices, and who arranges for Sandra Dee's character to be tested for her virginity. In Rome Adventure (1962), Ford played Daisy Bronson, a bookstore owner in Rome, opposite Suzanne Pleshette and Troy Donahue. She appeared in House of Women as an aggressive yet ultimately sympathetic prisoner who clashes with prison matron Jeanne Cooper, and in The Caretakers (1963) she played a tough nurse alongside Joan Crawford. She also had a walk-on role in All Fall Down as a flirtatious society matron who pursues Warren Beatty's character.
Ford made three appearances on Perry Mason, including the 1958 episode "The Case of the Deadly Double," in which she played a woman with multiple personality disorder, and two 1963 episodes in which she appeared as Frances Walden and defendant Sylvia Thompson respectively. Her television work extended across numerous series including Gunsmoke, Rawhide, Have Gun – Will Travel, Wanted: Dead or Alive, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Bat Masterson, The Phil Silvers Show, and The Twilight Zone episode "Uncle Simon," among many others. In 1960 she played Connie Walworth in the Thriller episode "Worse Than Murder," directed by Mitchell Leisen.
In 1967 Ford joined the daytime drama Another World, taking on the role of Ada Lucas Davis, the working-class mother of the character Rachel, played first by Robin Strasser and later by Victoria Wyndham. Over the course of her tenure, Ada navigated three marriages ending in divorce or widowhood, held jobs ranging from hairdresser to police clerk to restaurant owner, and in 1975 gave birth on-screen to a daughter named Nancy. Ford remained with the series until 1992, when declining health forced her departure. Following her death, the character of Ada was also written out, and the show paid tribute to both the actress and the role. The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences recognized Ford with a Certificate of Merit for Outstanding Contribution to Daytime Drama.
Ford was married to Shelley Hull, a son of actor Henry Hull, from 1946 to 1956. She died on February 26, 1993, at New York Hospital in Manhattan from cancer at the age of 69.
