About

Condola Phylea Rashad, born December 11, 1986, in New York, New York, is an American actress whose career has been defined primarily by her work in the theatre. The daughter of actress Phylicia Rashad and sportscaster and former professional football player Ahmad Rashad, she graduated from the California Institute of the Arts in 2008. She is also known professionally as Dola Rashad.

Rashad's stage career began in earnest in 2009 with the off-Broadway production of Lynn Nottage's Ruined, a play that went on to win the Pulitzer Prize. Her performance earned her the Theatre World Award for Best Debut Performance, a Drama Desk Award nomination for Outstanding Featured Actress in a Play, and a Drama League Award nomination for Distinguished Performance.

Her Broadway career spans 2011 to 2018 and includes five productions. She made her Broadway debut in Stick Fly, for which she received a 2012 Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Play and a Drama League Award nomination for Distinguished Performance. In April 2013, she appeared as Thelma in the revival of The Trip to Bountiful alongside Cicely Tyson, earning her second Tony nomination in the same category as well as a second Drama Desk nomination for Outstanding Featured Actress in a Play. Later that year, she played Juliet opposite Orlando Bloom in a Broadway production of Romeo and Juliet. In 2017, her role in A Doll's House, Part 2 brought her a third Tony nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Play. The following year, she starred as Joan of Arc in the Broadway revival of George Bernard Shaw's Saint Joan, receiving a Tony nomination for Best Actress in a Play and a Drama League nomination for Distinguished Performance. Across these four Tony-nominated performances, Rashad became the youngest performer to accumulate that number of nominations.

Outside the theatre, Rashad starred as Shelby in the 2012 television remake of Steel Magnolias alongside Queen Latifah, a role originated by Julia Roberts in the 1989 film. She appeared in a recurring role on the NBC series Smash in 2012 and had guest appearances on The Good Wife, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, and Submissions Only. Her film credits include Sex and the City 2 and 30 Beats. Beginning in 2016, she played Kate Sacker on the Showtime drama series Billions. That same year she appeared in Money Monster, directed by Jodie Foster. In 2018, she co-starred with Chiwetel Ejiofor in the Netflix biographical film Come Sunday, in which Ejiofor portrayed a Pentecostal minister. Rashad has also been included on BET's Future 40 list, which recognizes forty individuals redefining what it means to be young, gifted, and Black.
