About

Colin Stinton is a Canadian-American actor born on March 10, 1947, in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. He moved to the United States with his family in 1952, spending his childhood traveling throughout the country before settling in the Chicago area. He attended Northern Illinois University, where he participated in campus productions and later joined an alumni group that performed in Chicago under the name the Dinglefest Theatre Company, an organization that went on to establish The Theatre Building. His years in the Chicago theatre scene brought him into regular contact with playwright and director David Mamet, a professional relationship that would shape much of his subsequent career.

Stinton relocated to New York in 1978, where he remained until 1985. During that period he originated the title role in Mamet's Edmond and received a Theatre World Award in 1978 for his performance in Mamet's The Water Engine on Broadway. His Broadway work across the full span of his career also includes The Curse of an Aching Heart, Happiness, and The Graduate. He earned a Drama Desk Award nomination for his role in the American premiere of Richard Nelson's Some Americans Abroad, which is also among his Broadway credits. He played Mr. Robinson in both the London and New York stage productions of The Graduate.

In 1985 Stinton moved to London, where he spent several years at the National Theatre alongside work in the West End, film, television, and radio. His stage work encompasses premieres of new plays by David Mamet, Richard Nelson, Jean-Claude van Itallie, Dusty Hughes, David Hare, John Osborne, and Tom Stoppard. He appeared in the original London stage production of Rain Man and in a West End revival of The Pajama Game in 2014. He is a Joseph Jefferson Award winner in addition to his Drama Desk Award nomination.

Stinton's screen work includes the role of Neal Daniels in The Bourne Ultimatum and Dr. Dave Greenwalt in the James Bond film Tomorrow Never Dies. His television credits include President Arthur Coleman Winters in the Doctor Who episode "The Sound of Drums," U.S. Secretary of State Al Haig in The Falklands Play, the U.S. Ambassador to the United Kingdom in The Trial of Tony Blair, United States Secretary of State Traynor Styles in Spooks, and Justice Robert H. Jackson in the BBC docudrama Nuremberg: Nazis on Trial. He appeared as Lt. Colonel Hoyt Jackson in the 2013 Foyle's War episode "Sunflower" and played Charles Lester in the Agatha Christie's Poirot installment "The Lost Mine." He also appeared in the 2001 Sophie Ellis-Bextor music video "Murder on the Dancefloor." Stinton currently divides his time between Walthamstow, Greater London, and Chicago.
