About
Coley Wallace (April 5, 1927 – January 30, 2005) was an American heavyweight boxer and actor born in Jacksonville, Florida. His career spanned professional athletics, film, and Broadway, making him a distinctive figure across multiple entertainment and sports worlds.
Wallace first gained widespread attention in 1948 as an amateur boxer, when he defeated future heavyweight champion Rocky Marciano in the finals of the New York Golden Gloves Tournament. The outcome was determined by a close split decision over three rounds, and the verdict was met with displeasure from the crowd, with many observers viewing the bout as a draw. As a professional, Wallace compiled a record of 20 wins, 7 losses, and no draws, and his opponents included Ezzard Charles. Behind the scenes, his professional career was complicated by his association with Frank "Blinky" Palermo, a member of the Philadelphia crime family who covertly held ownership of Wallace's contract. Palermo was imprisoned in 1961 on charges of conspiracy and extortion related to his undisclosed control of prizefighters.
Following his boxing career, Wallace transitioned to acting and appeared in four films. He portrayed heavyweight champion Joe Louis on three separate occasions: in The Joe Louis Story (1953), in the television movie Marciano (1979), and in Raging Bull (1980), in which he depicted Louis during the Louis-Cerdan fight. His other film credits include Carib Gold (1957), in which he played a character named Ryan, and Rooftops (1989), where he appeared as Lester in what would be his final screen role.
Wallace also appeared on Broadway in 1961, with his stage credits including Mandingo. He died of heart failure in New York City on January 30, 2005.
