About
Cody Robert Simpson was born on 11 January 1997 in Benowa, a suburb of the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia, to parents Brad and Angie Simpson. He has two younger siblings, Alli and Tom, and attended All Saints Anglican School while growing up. Simpson is a singer, actor, and former competitive swimmer.
Simpson began his music career in 2009 by uploading cover songs to YouTube, including versions of Jason Mraz's "I'm Yours," Justin Timberlake's "Cry Me a River," "I Want You Back" by The Jackson 5, and Bon Jovi's "Wanted Dead or Alive." His early rise to recognition was covered by The 7.30 Report in December 2009. He relocated to Los Angeles with his family in June 2010 to record with Atlantic Records' Shawn Campbell, and released his debut single, "iYiYi," featuring rapper Flo Rida, on 15 May 2010. An EP titled 4 U followed on 21 December 2010. Simpson also recorded a remake of "I Want Candy" by The Strangeloves as the theme song for the film Hop.
His second EP, Coast to Coast, was released on 20 September 2011 through Atlantic Records, reaching number 12 on the Billboard 200 and selling 24,000 copies. On 22 September 2011, it was announced that Scooter Braun had become Simpson's manager. His debut studio album, Paradise, was released on 2 October 2012, preceded by the EP Preview to Paradise in June of that year. In February 2013, Simpson toured Europe, including dates supporting Justin Bieber on the Believe Tour. His second studio album, Surfers Paradise, released on 16 July 2013, became his first to debut in the top ten of the Billboard 200. Simpson also released an acoustic album, The Acoustic Sessions, on 19 November 2013, featuring tracks including "Pretty Brown Eyes," "La Da Dee," and a cover of "Please Come Home for Christmas."
In March 2014, Simpson was announced as a celebrity contestant on the 18th season of Dancing with the Stars, partnered with professional dancer Witney Carson. He was eliminated in Week 5, finishing in ninth place. In August 2014, Simpson departed Warner/Atlantic Records, citing creative differences, and subsequently established his own label, Coast House. His third studio album, Free, was released on 10 July 2015, produced by Cisco Adler with songwriting contributions from G. Love and Donavon Frankenreiter. In 2017, Simpson formed a band called Cody Simpson and the Tide, composed of Simpson on vocals and guitar, Adrian Cota on drums, and Shareef Addo on bass. The group released a debut EP, Wave One, in fall 2017, blending pop, rock, blues, and surf-rock. The EP's lead single, "Waiting for the Tide," was drawn from a poem Simpson wrote addressing rising water levels and ocean conservation. The band released an additional song, "Underwater," in August 2018, before splitting in early 2019.
Simpson made his Broadway debut in 2017, and went on to portray the lead role of Dmitry in the musical Anastasia from November 2018 through April 2019. That same year, he won the first season of The Masked Singer Australia, competing as "Robot." In October 2019, he released the single "Golden Thing." In April 2022, Simpson released a self-titled fourth studio album, which he had recorded during a break from swimming training in 2020. That November, he performed the Australian National Anthem at the Lexus Melbourne Cup and the AFL Women's Grand Final, and in December 2022 he performed at the 85th annual Carols by Candlelight in Melbourne.
In 2022, Simpson joined the Australian Swim Team after qualifying for the Commonwealth Games during Australia's team trials. He retired from competitive swimming in June 2024 after failing to qualify for the Paris Olympics. Simpson subsequently announced a return to music, revealing a new record deal with BMG and an upcoming album titled Spring, with singles including "Baby Blue" and "When It Comes To Loving You."
