About

Clotilde Bressler-Gianoli (June 3, 1875 – May 12, 1912) was a Swiss-born contralto of Italian parentage whose career spanned major opera houses in Europe and North America. Born in Geneva, she is also found in some sources under the spelling Clothilde, and a small number of records place her birth year in 1874. Her father and mother were Italian, and she grew up in Geneva, where she demonstrated an aptitude for piano from an early age, giving public performances by the age of seven. She subsequently pursued formal vocal training at conservatories in both Geneva and Milan.

Bressler-Gianoli made her professional debut at nineteen in a Geneva production of Saint-Saëns's Samson et Dalila. Her career advanced quickly, and she took on the title role of Bizet's Carmen in Brussels in 1895 and in Paris in 1900. Her most prominent performances in that role came at the Manhattan Opera House in New York City in 1906 and 1907, where The New York Times described her portrayal as "a striking and original performance...[her portrayal has] the allurement of sheer wickedness and all the wiles and treacheries that wickedness suggests." During that run, she sustained an injury when tenor Charles Dalmorès accidentally stabbed her with a prop blade sharp enough to draw blood; she performed the following night with her arm bandaged. Also at the Manhattan Opera House in 1907, she appeared in the title role of Ambroise Thomas's Mignon. She held the position of principal contralto at La Scala in 1908, the same year she made her Broadway appearance in Charpentier's Louise. In 1911, as a member of the Philadelphia-Chicago Opera Company, she performed in both Massenet's Thaïs and a further production of Louise alongside soprano Mary Garden and Dalmorès.

Bressler-Gianoli was married and had at least one son, Henri, who traveled with her to New York as a young child. In 1909 she was reported to be experiencing a loss of sight and was seeking treatment in Zürich. She died in Geneva on May 12, 1912, from sepsis following an appendectomy, at the age of thirty-six.
