About
Clive Clerk (October 17, 1945 – June 22, 2005) was a Trinidad-born actor, dancer, painter, and interior designer who later worked under the name Clive Wilson. Born in Trinidad, he moved to Canada as a child before relocating to New York City at the age of 17 to pursue a performing career.
Clerk's early professional work included the role of Wang San in the road company of Flower Drum Song and a lead part in the 1963 film The Seven Day Idol. He subsequently moved to Los Angeles, where he worked in film and television throughout the 1960s and early 1970s. His television credits during this period included Combat! (1965), I Spy (1966), The Virginian (1966), Days of Our Lives (1966–1967), where he played David Martin on the NBC daytime soap opera, The Mod Squad (1968–1970), and Happy Days (1970). His film appearances included Send Me No Flowers (1964), Dear Brigitte (1965), and Billie (1965).
In 1975, Clerk joined the original Broadway cast of A Chorus Line, originating the role of Larry, the assistant director and choreographer, and also serving as understudy for the role of Zach. The production went on to win the Pulitzer Prize. In recognition of his work in the ensemble, Clerk received a Theatre World Special Award in 1976.
Following his performing career, Clerk transitioned into visual art and design, working as an abstract painter and interior designer under the name Clive Wilson. His paintings were exhibited in galleries, and his interior design work, including the apartment of actor and writer Tom Tryon, was featured in Architectural Digest. Clerk and Tryon had been in a relationship during the 1970s before separating in 1972. Clerk died in Los Angeles, California, on June 22, 2005, at the age of 59.
