About
John Clifford Rose, born on 24 October 1929 in Herefordshire, England, was a British actor whose career spanned stage, television, and film across more than six decades. He died on 6 November 2021 at the age of 92 at Denville Hall, a retirement home for theatrical professionals in which he had taken up residence in September of that year. He is survived by two children from his marriage to Celia Ryder, whom he wed in 1957 and who predeceased him in 2012. The family made their home in Stratford-upon-Avon.
Rose received his education at the King's School, Worcester, and King's College London, after which he worked in repertory theatre before beginning his long association with the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1960. He was later designated an RSC Honorary Associate Artist. His Broadway career brought him to New York in 1965, when he appeared in The Persecution and Assassination of Marat as Performed by the Inmates of the Asylum of Charenton Under the Direction of the Marquis de Sade, a production originating from Hamnish, England. He reprised his involvement with the work when a film adaptation was released in 1967, in which he played Monsieur Coulmier.
On British television, Rose became widely recognized for his portrayal of Sturmbannführer Ludwig Kessler in the BBC wartime drama Secret Army, which ran from 1977 to 1979, and returned to the role in the sequel series Kessler in 1981. That same year he appeared as Rorvik in the Doctor Who serial Warriors' Gate. He took on the role of SS General Hans Kammler in the 1988 American miniseries War and Remembrance. Among his other prominent television credits were leading roles in The Pallisers in 1974, Fortunes of War in 1987, and Alan Bleasdale's GBH in 1991. He played King George V in the television film Wallis and Edward in 2005 and the Dean of Windsor in an episode of The Crown broadcast in 2019.
Rose also appeared in recurring and guest capacities across numerous British series. He played Dr. Snell, an interrogative psychologist for a covert organization known as The Section, in the spy drama Callan, and portrayed a judge in multiple episodes of Crown Court. A small role as college professor Dr. Charles Hudson came in the 1989 Inspector Morse episode The Ghost in the Machine. In 2008 he appeared as Bishop Wood in an episode of Foyle's War, and in October 2010 he played Father Gregory in the Midsomer Murders episode Master Class.
His stage work in later years included the role of The Judge in Enid Bagnold's The Chalk Garden at the Donmar Warehouse in the summer of 2008, a performance for which he received the Clarence Derwent Award in 2009. A radio adaptation of that production was first broadcast on BBC Radio 3 in March 2011. His film appearances included roles in Tell Me Lies and Work Is a 4-Letter Word, both released in 1968, as well as Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and The Iron Lady, both released in 2011.
