Clement Fowler

Clement "Clem" Fowler (December 27, 1924 – August 16, 2009) was an American character actor who worked across stage, film, and television. Born in Detroit, Michigan, he built a career spanning several decades, with Broadway appearances from 1951 to 1996.

Fowler's stage work included productions such as Inherit the Wind, Fragile Fox, The Cold Wind and the Warm, and The Sunshine Boys. His most prominent Broadway credit came in 1964, when he originated the role of Rosencrantz in John Gielgud's production of Hamlet, performing opposite Richard Burton in the title role. He subsequently reprised the role in the filmed record of that production.

His screen work included a range of supporting roles across film and television. Among his film appearances were the Doctor in The Chosen (1981), Eddie's father in Diner (1982), Banker Williams in Playing for Keeps (1986), the Florist in The Age of Innocence (1993), and a role in Tony n' Tina's Wedding (2004). On television, Fowler made multiple guest appearances on Law & Order between 1991 and 2006 and appeared on New York Undercover in 1996.

Fowler died on August 16, 2009, in New York City at the age of 84. An obituary published in the New York Times noted his long stage career and his participation in Burton's Hamlet.
