About

Claude Sydney Brook Marnat, known professionally as Claudio Brook, was born on 28 August 1927 in Mexico City to a British father and a Mexican mother of French Basque descent. Raised trilingual in Spanish, English, and French, Brook worked as a clerk at the British embassy in his early years while playing semi-professional association football for Atlante F.C. He died of stomach cancer on 18 October 1995 at the age of 68.

Brook built a career spanning nearly four decades across film, stage, and television, becoming recognized as one of the prominent figures of the Golden Age of Mexican Cinema. His film debut came in 1955, and he went on to appear in more than 100 film and television productions. Among his most significant professional relationships was his collaboration with Spanish director Luis Buñuel, with whom he worked on five films over nine years: The Young One (1960), Viridiana (1961), The Exterminating Angel (1962), Simon of the Desert (1965), and The Milky Way (1969).

Brook also appeared in several international productions throughout his career. He played a British RAF pilot in French director Gérard Oury's war comedy La Grande Vadrouille (1966), and portrayed secret agent Francis Coplan in Coplan Saves His Skin (1968). Later roles included a banker in the James Bond film Licence to Kill (1989) and the character Barone in Tony Scott's Revenge (1990). One of his final screen appearances was as the villain Dieter de la Guardia in Cronos (1992), the directorial debut of Guillermo del Toro. He posthumously starred in the telenovela Retrato de familia, which premiered one week after his death.

For his work in film, Brook received two Ariel Awards: Best Actor for Memoriales perdidos (1985) and Best Supporting Actor for Esperanza (1988). He was also inducted into the Paseo de las Luminarias. His voice work extended throughout his career, encompassing dubbing, narration, and commercial work. He served as the official Spanish-language spokesperson for Chrysler Motors from 1984 to 1992 and recorded bumpers and sign-ons for Chilean radio.

Brook's stage work included a Broadway appearance in 1965 in Man of La Mancha. He later directed his theatrical engagement with the production in Mexico City, where he played the lead role in the Mexican premiere of Man of La Mancha in 1969.

Brook was married three times: first to Spanish-born Mercedes Pascual, then to fellow voice actor Eugenia Avendaño, and finally to Alicia Bonet. He had four children, including actress Simone Brook, born in 1969, and Arturo Brook, born in 1972, who became an international tax attorney. His daughter Claudia died of cancer in 1997, and his son Gabriel died in 2004.
