Clarence Felder, born September 2, 1938, in St. Matthews, South Carolina, is an American actor, playwright, and director whose career has spanned Broadway, film, and television. He is a co-founder of Actors' Theatre of South Carolina and its film division, Moving Images Group. He is married to actress, writer, and director Chris Weatherhead, and has one daughter, Helen Huggins.
Felder appeared on Broadway between 1969 and 1983, accumulating credits across more than ten productions. His stage work included Teaneck Tanzi: The Venus Flytrap, in which he played the father of the character portrayed by Debbie Harry, as well as The Queen and the Rebels opposite Colleen Dewhurst, The Suicide, They Knew What They Wanted, and 27 Wagons Full of Cotton. Additional Broadway credits included Macbeth alongside Christopher Walken, Love for Love with Glenn Close, and Memory of Two Mondays with Meryl Streep.
His feature film career began with Man on a Swing in 1974. Subsequent film appearances included The Goodbye Girl (1977), After Hours (1985), Ruthless People (1986), The Hidden (1987), The Last Boy Scout (1991), and The Ride (1997). Felder wrote the play Captain Felder's Cannon, which was adapted into the feature film All for Liberty (2009), in which he starred as his ancestor Captain Henry Felder, an American Revolutionary War figure from the Backcountry of South Carolina. Later film roles included Republic of Pete and Angel Camouflaged (both 2010), John Laurens' War (2016), and Frederick Douglass: No Turning Back (2022).
On television, Felder held a starring role as Inspector Bobo Pritzger on the ABC series Hooperman. His television movie credits include Playing for Time, The Mystery of the Morro Castle, and The Killing Floor. He also made guest appearances on series including Kojak, Hill Street Blues, Alien Nation, Dream On, L.A. Law, and NYPD Blue.
