About

Clara T. Bracy, born Clara Rose Hodges on 1 January 1848 in London, England, was an English stage and silent film actress whose career spanned several decades across multiple continents. Her father, Edward Hodges, operated the Royal Oak Public House in London, and her mother was Eliza, née Cooper, who had married Edward on 29 September 1842. Among her step-siblings was actress Lydia Thompson. She also had three biological brothers — Abraham Edward Hodges, Isaac William Hodges, and Jacob George Hodges — who were triplets, born 16 July 1844.

Bracy built much of her early career in Australia alongside her husband, tenor Henry Bracy. In September 1873, the couple traveled to Melbourne to perform in Jacques Offenbach's operetta Lischen et Fritzchen at the Theatre Royal. They were subsequently engaged by Irish musical impresario William Saurin Lyster to lead a season of French operetta, a commitment that lasted five years. Their repertoire under Lyster included Charles Lecocq's La fille de Madame Angot and Giroflé-Girofla, several Offenbach works — among them The Grand Duchess of Gerolstein, La belle Hélène, Barbe-bleue, La Périchole, La princesse de Trébizonde, and Les brigands — as well as Hervé's Chilpéric and the first Australian production of Les cloches de Corneville. During this period, the Bracys also undertook a tour of the United States in 1876. In 1880 they returned to Britain, where they continued performing in comic opera and operetta.

The couple made a second extended visit to Australia beginning in 1888, performing in concerts and then appearing at the Sydney Opera House in a season conducted by Henri Kowalski that included Kowalski's Moustique and The Beggar Student. By 1890, they were leading their own company in productions of The Sultan of Mocha, The Beggar Student, and The Lady of the Locket at the Criterion Theatre, before joining J. C. Williamson's Royal Comic Opera Company for a further period of Gilbert and Sullivan and other comic opera productions. The Bracys had two sons: Sidney Bracy, who acted with Williamson's company before pursuing a stage and film career in Britain and America, and Philip, who became a West End actor and was wounded as a young soldier.

In 1908, Bracy relocated to California to appear in D. W. Griffith's film The Red Girl, leaving her husband behind in Australia. That same year marked the beginning of her Broadway career, which continued through 1922. Her stage credits in New York included Aphrodite, The Old Lady Shows Her Medals, The Off Chance, The Red Poppy, and Blood and Sand, among other productions. She also appeared on Broadway for producer Charles Frohman. Concurrent with her stage work, Bracy appeared in approximately 90 films between 1908 and 1932, placing her among the earliest actresses to work extensively in silent film. Her husband Henry Bracy died in 1917, at which time Clara was living in New York with their son Sidney.

Clara T. Bracy died in Los Angeles, California on 22 February 1941, at the age of 93.
