About
Claire Catherine Danes was born on April 12, 1979, in Manhattan, New York City, to Carla Danes, a sculptor and printmaking artist, and Christopher Danes, a photographer and residential general contractor. She has an older brother, Asa, who works as a lawyer. The family lived in a SoHo loft on Crosby Street, where her mother operated a toddler day care center called "Danes Tribe" and later served as her daughter's manager. Danes is named after her paternal grandmother, Claire Danes. She attended P.S. 3, P.S. 11, and the Professional Performing Arts School before enrolling at the New York City Lab School for Collaborative Studies, where her future Homeland co-star Morena Baccarin was a classmate. She spent one year at The Dalton School before relocating with her family to Santa Monica, California. Danes graduated from the Lycée Français de Los Angeles in 1997 and began studying psychology at Yale University in 1998, leaving after two years to concentrate on her acting career.
Danes began studying dance at age six, taking classes from Ellen Robbins at Dance Theater Workshop, and pursued acting training at HB Studio and the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute starting at age ten. By age nine she had shifted her primary focus to acting, and an audition with director Miloš Forman at age eleven led to appearances in student films. She signed with agent Karen Friedman at the Writers & Artists talent agency at twelve. Her early television work included a 1993 guest role on Law & Order and an appearance in an HBO Lifestories: Families in Crisis episode before she landed the lead role of Angela Chase in the 1994 teen drama series My So-Called Life. That performance earned her a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Television Series Drama and a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series.
Her film career began in 1994 with a role as Beth March in Little Women, and she achieved wider recognition in 1996 starring as Juliet opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in Baz Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet. Subsequent film credits include The Rainmaker (1997), directed by Francis Ford Coppola; Brokedown Palace (1999); The Hours (2002), in which she played the daughter of Meryl Streep's character; Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003); Shopgirl (2005); and Stardust (2007).
Danes made her Broadway debut in 2007, appearing in a revival of Pygmalion, in which she played Eliza Doolittle. Prior to that appearance, she had performed Off-Broadway in a production of The Vagina Monologues in 2000.
Her television career continued with significant recognition in the following decade. In 2010, she portrayed Temple Grandin in the HBO biographical film of the same name, winning the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Miniseries or Television Film, and the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Miniseries or Television Movie. From 2011 to 2020, she starred as CIA officer Carrie Mathison in the Showtime series Homeland, a role that brought her two additional Primetime Emmy Awards and two Golden Globe Awards for Best Actress in a Drama Series. In 2012, Time magazine included her on its list of the 100 most influential people in the world. In total, Danes has received three Primetime Emmy Awards and four Golden Globe Awards.
More recently, Danes starred in the Apple TV drama series The Essex Serpent (2022), playing Cora Seaborn, a role she took over from Keira Knightley. That same year she appeared in the FX on Hulu miniseries Fleishman Is in Trouble, earning a Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie. In 2023, she appeared in Steven Soderbergh's HBO Max miniseries Full Circle. In 2025, she starred as author Aggie Wiggs in the Netflix psychological thriller The Beast in Me, opposite Matthew Rhys.
