About
Ciara Renée Harper, born October 19, 1990, in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, is an American actress and musician whose vocal type is mezzo-soprano. She attended Central Dauphin East High School before earning a degree in Music Theatre from Baldwin Wallace University in 2013.
Renée made her Broadway debut in September 2013 at the Neil Simon Theatre, taking on the role of The Witch in Big Fish, having previously participated in a pre-Broadway workshop of Bull Durham. In February 2014, she joined the Broadway revival of Pippin, stepping into the role of the Leading Player as a replacement for Patina Miller. Later that year, in the fall of 2014, she guest-starred on NBC's Law & Order: SVU.
In early 2015, Renée portrayed Esmeralda in a musical adaptation of The Hunchback of Notre Dame, based on the Victor Hugo novel and the animated Disney film, at Paper Mill Playhouse in association with La Jolla Playhouse, with the run taking place from March 15 to April 5. That same year, she was cast as Kendra Saunders / Hawkgirl in the CW's DC Comics television universe, first appearing in the first-season finale of The Flash on May 20, 2015, then in four episodes of Arrow. She subsequently joined the main cast of DC's Legends of Tomorrow for its first season, which premiered in January 2016.
Also in 2016, Renée played Susan in an Off-Broadway revival of Jonathan Larson's Tick, Tick... Boom!, which ran from October 20 to December 18, with Lilli Cooper replacing her in the role on November 22. The following summer, in 2017, she played Mary Magdalene in Andrew Lloyd Webber's Jesus Christ Superstar at The Muny in St. Louis, Missouri.
On January 15, 2020, it was announced that Renée would return to Broadway as Elsa in Frozen, beginning February 18 of that year. The production was shut down in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and Disney subsequently announced that Frozen would not reopen. On November 25, 2021, Renée joined the Broadway cast of Waitress as Jenna, replacing country singer Jennifer Nettles and performing opposite Joshua Henry as Dr. Pomatter.
On August 25, 2025, it was reported that Renée had filed a lawsuit against the producers of the musical Wanted after she was informed she would be recast before the show's Broadway transfer. Renée had originated the co-lead role of Mary Clarke at Paper Mill Playhouse in New Jersey during an earlier run of the production under the title Gun and Powder, and her suit alleged that her contract for that run guaranteed her the right to continue in the role in a New York or London production upon completion of good faith negotiations.
