Rich made his Broadway debut in 1980, appearing in The Bacchae. The following year, he began a four-year run on the daytime drama Another World, portraying Alexander "Sandy" Cory from 1981 to 1985. It was during this period that he married his Another World co-star Nancy Frangione; the two remained married until 1996 and have a daughter together, Mariel Rich.
In 1987, Rich took on the lead role of Prince Eric Charming in the television series The Charmings, which ran through 1988 and featured a cast that included Carol Huston, Caitlin O'Heaney, Judy Parfitt, and Paul Winfield. Throughout the 1990s, Rich accumulated recurring television roles alongside various guest appearances. He also directed several episodes during the show's fifth and sixth seasons. Concurrently, Rich appeared in a recurring capacity on Boston Legal as attorney Melvin Palmer. Additional television credits include the role of Bruce, a book publisher, in two episodes of Desperate Housewives, and the role of Mel's father in Melissa & Joey.
In 2003, Rich married Eva Rich, born Ewa Halina Jesionowska, a Miss Poland 1985 finalist and former gymnast who competed at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow. The couple have fraternal twin daughters, Lily and Daisy Rich.
