About

Christopher Chadman (born circa 1948 – April 30, 1995) was an American dancer and choreographer who worked on Broadway from 1968 to 1987. A native of the Bronx, New York, he trained at the High School of Performing Arts before launching a career that spanned performance, choreography, and collaboration with some of the most significant figures in American musical theater.

Chadman made his Broadway debut in 1968 as a member of the ensemble in Darling of the Day. He went on to appear in Applause, The Rothschilds, Pippin, Rockabye Hamlet, and A Chorus Line, among other productions. His work on A Chorus Line carried particular personal significance, as much of the character Greg was drawn from his own life experiences. He received star billing when he took the title role in the 1976 revival of Pal Joey. His Broadway performing credits also include Chicago and Happy Birthday, Mr. Abbott!

A significant portion of Chadman's career involved collaboration with director and choreographer Bob Fosse. The two worked together on Chicago, Dancin', and Big Deal. Chadman subsequently built a choreographic career of his own, creating work for Merlin, a nightclub act for Chita Rivera, and a concert featuring Peter Allen and The Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall. He also choreographed a New York City Center concert version of Fiorello!, conceived and staged three concerts for Michael Feinstein, and created dance sequences for The Sisters Rosensweig.

His choreography for the 1992 Broadway revival of Guys and Dolls earned him a Tony Award nomination for Best Choreography, a Drama Desk Award nomination for Outstanding Choreography, and the Fred Astaire Award. His film work includes The Flamingo Kid, The Muppets Take Manhattan, and Scenes from a Mall.

Chadman died on April 30, 1995, in New York City from complications from AIDS. His papers from 1970 to 1993 are held by the Billy Rose Theatre Division of the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts.
