About
Christopher Jacob Abbott, born on February 10, 1986, in Greenwich, Connecticut, is an American actor whose career spans independent film, television, and Broadway. The son of Anna (née Servidio) and Orville Abbott, he has an older sister, Christina. His father was born in the Caribbean, and his maternal grandmother Angelina was born in Rosà, a town in the province of Vicenza, Italy. Abbott has described himself as a "Euro-mutt," citing distant Portuguese and Eastern European ancestry. He spent his early years in Chickahominy, a working-class, heavily Italian-American neighborhood in Greenwich, before growing up in Stamford. He worked at a local video store and at a friend's wine store before attending Norwalk Community College and later studying acting at HB Studio. He relocated to New York City in 2006 to be closer to school.
Abbott's first acting work came through open calls he attended while still a student. His first off-Broadway role was in Good Boys and True, which opened in spring 2008, written by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and directed by Scott Ellis. Abbott played Justin, the gay best friend of the lead character. His second off-Broadway production, Mouth to Mouth, opened in fall 2008, written by Kevin Elyot and directed by Mark Brokaw. Abbott played the sympathetic 15-year-old son of the character Laura, portrayed by Lisa Emery. Both productions earned him positive notices. He subsequently appeared in guest roles on the television series Nurse Jackie and Law & Order: Criminal Intent, and in 2010 co-starred opposite Cristin Milioti and Laila Robins in That Face at the Manhattan Theatre Club.
Abbott made his Broadway debut in 2011 in the revival of The House of Blue Leaves, directed by David Cromer and featuring Ben Stiller and Edie Falco. He played Ronnie Shaughnessy, the sullen, recently drafted son, a role that earned him favorable reviews. That same year, he made his feature film debut in Martha Marcy May Marlene, written and directed by Sean Durkin and starring Elizabeth Olsen. The film premiered at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival and received a limited theatrical release in October 2011.
In 2012, Abbott joined the HBO comedy-drama series Girls, created by Lena Dunham, playing Charlie Dattolo, the docile boyfriend of Marnie, portrayed by Allison Williams. The series premiered on April 15, 2012. Abbott departed after the show's second-season finale, citing an inability to relate to the character, though he returned for the season five episode "The Panic in Central Park." Also in 2012, he co-starred opposite Melanie Lynskey in Hello I Must Be Going, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival before a theatrical release in September 2012.
Abbott continued to work in theater throughout this period. In fall 2013, he appeared in Where We're Born by Lucy Thurber at the Rattlestick Playwrights Theater, directed by Jackson Gay, alongside Betty Gilpin, playing a character named Tony. In 2014, he co-starred with Sam Rockwell and Nina Arianda in Sam Shepard's Fool for Love at the Williamstown Theatre Festival, directed by Daniel Aukin. In fall 2015, he played Elias Schreiber-Hoffman in Annie Baker's John at the Signature Theatre, directed by Sam Gold and co-starring Georgia Engel and Lois Smith. The New York Times named the production one of the best plays of 2015. In summer 2016, Abbott co-starred opposite Marisa Tomei in Tennessee Williams' The Rose Tattoo at the Williamstown Theatre Festival, directed by Trip Cullman.
His film work in the mid-2010s included the supporting role of Louis Servidio in J. C. Chandor's A Most Violent Year (2014), starring Oscar Isaac and Jessica Chastain, which premiered at AFI Fest in November 2014. Abbott starred in the title role of James White (2015), directed by Josh Mond and co-starring Cynthia Nixon. The film premiered at Sundance in January 2015 and earned Abbott a nomination for the Independent Spirit Award for Best Male Lead. He appeared in the comedy war film Whiskey Tango Foxtrot (2016) opposite Tina Fey and Martin Freeman, and co-starred opposite Olivia Cooke in Katie Says Goodbye, which premiered at the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival.
Abbott portrayed astronaut David Scott in the biographical drama First Man (2018) and starred opposite Mia Wasikowska in Nicolas Pesce's Piercing (2018). He played Captain Yossarian in the Hulu miniseries Catch-22 (2019), earning a Golden Globe Award nomination for the performance. Additional film credits include It Comes at Night (2017) alongside Joel Edgerton and Riley Keough, Sweet Virginia (2017) opposite Jon Bernthal, Possessor (2020), Black Bear (2020), The Forgiven (2021), Sanctuary (2022), and Poor Things (2023), directed by Yorgos Lanthimos.
