About
Christine Andreas, born October 1, 1951, in Camden, New Jersey, is an American actress and singer whose Broadway career spans from 1975 to 2010. The daughter of James Francis Andreas, a systems analyst, and Teresa Cecilia Genovese Andreas, she grew up in Suffern, New York, where she attended Suffern High School.
Andreas made her Broadway debut in a 1975 revival of Angel Street. The following year she was cast as Eliza Doolittle in the 20th Anniversary production of My Fair Lady, a role that earned her the Theatre World Award in 1976. She appeared on the cast recording of that production. In 1979 she played Laurey in a revival of Oklahoma!, receiving a Tony Award nomination for Best Actress in a Musical, and contributed to the production's cast recording. Her 1983 appearance in On Your Toes brought a second Tony nomination, this time for Best Featured Actress in a Musical. She joined the cast of Rags in 1986, and her role as Alice in Legs Diamond during its 1988 previews was ultimately cut before the show opened. Andreas joined the cast of The Scarlet Pimpernel in 1997, appearing on both the original cast recording and the 1998 encore recording. In 2010 she portrayed Jacqueline in the Broadway revival of La Cage Aux Folles, which opened April 18 of that year following a transfer from London's West End.
Prior to her Broadway debut, Andreas served as a standby in Words & Music with Sammy Cahn in 1974. Regional credits include Tartuffe at the Kennedy Center in 1982, where she played Mariane, and Twelfth Night at Alaska Rep. In February 1992 she appeared in Marsha Norman's Sarah and Abraham at the George Street Playhouse in New Brunswick, New Jersey. That same venue hosted her 1993 appearance in The Fields of Ambrosia, a musical she created in collaboration with her husband, composer Martin Silvestri. The production subsequently moved to London's Aldwych Theatre in 1996, accompanied by a cast recording. In 2002 she played Vera in Pal Joey at the Prince Music Theater, a performance that won her the Barrymore Award for Outstanding Leading Actress in a Musical. She starred in the U.S. tour of The Light in the Piazza as Margaret Johnson, beginning in San Francisco in August 2006, and received a Helen Hayes Award nomination for Outstanding Leading Actress in a Non-Resident Production for that role. In June 2013 she portrayed Judy Garland in Heartbreaker: Two Months with Judy Garland at the Adirondack Theatre Festival, the stage premiere of John Meyer's 1983 book about his time with Garland.
Andreas also appeared in the musical revue Stardust, conceived and written by Albert Harris with costumes and sets by Erté. The production ran at the Stamford Center for the Arts at the Palace Theater and at the Kennedy Center in 1990 but did not proceed to Broadway as originally planned.
Her television work includes appearances on The Cosby Show, Another World, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, and Sylvia Fine Kaye's Musical Comedy Tonight III in 1995. She portrayed Ava Gardner in the 1995 made-for-TV film Mia, Child of Hollywood.
As a cabaret performer, Andreas has appeared at venues including the Café Carlyle, the Algonquin Hotel's Oak Room, Carnegie Hall, the Catalina Grill in Los Angeles, and the Ballroom in New York City. She has also given concerts in London, Paris, Rome, and at the White House. In 2013 she performed her show Bemused at 54 Below, and in February 2014 she gave a concert at the Kupferberg Center for the Arts at Queens College based on her solo recording Love is Good. Her discography includes the solo albums Love is Good, Here's to the Ladies, The Carlyle Set, and Piaf: No Regrets.
Andreas is married to composer and musician Martin Silvestri, with whom she collaborated on The Fields of Ambrosia. She was previously married to creative director Kevin Hunter. She has one son, and Silvestri has one daughter.
