About

Christian Campbell is a Canadian actor born on May 12, 1972, in Toronto, Ontario. He comes from a family with deep roots in performance: his father, Gerry Campbell, a Scottish immigrant from the East End of Glasgow, taught high school drama in Mississauga, Ontario, at Westwood Secondary School, Lorne Park Secondary School, and Erindale Secondary School. His mother, Marnie, a yoga instructor and psychologist originally from Amsterdam, Netherlands, also operated a theatre in Guelph, Ontario. His maternal grandparents ran a theatre company in the Netherlands, and his paternal grandparents were likewise performers. Campbell's siblings include actress Neve Campbell, actor Alex Campbell, and Damian McDonald. His parents divorced when he was three, after which he and Neve lived primarily with their father. Campbell trained at Claude Watson School for the Arts in Toronto and was working professionally as an actor by age fourteen.

His earliest stage experience came through his father's pantomime productions for the Association for Scottish Traditions and Arts in Etobicoke, Ontario. His first starring stage role was as Nick in A Thousand Clowns, performed at his mother's dinner theatre. In the early 1990s, he toured Europe, appearing in productions including Der Ritter Von Mirakel and A Clockwork Orange at the Schauspielhaus in Nürnberg. Shortly after relocating to Los Angeles in 1995, Campbell co-founded the theatre company Blue Sphere Alliance and began directing alongside his acting work, making his directorial debut with the one-act play Reach, which starred Matthew Lillard and Sandra Thigpen. In 2000, he produced his first off-Broadway play, Trust, in New York City.

Campbell's Broadway and musical theatre credits include tick, tick... BOOM!, Jonathan Larson's musical in which he played the role of Jon. He joined the production in 2002, performing on a national tour of the United States and later appearing in the London production at the Menier Chocolate Factory from July through September 2005. In 2001, he starred as Jimmy Harper in the stage musical Reefer Madness. He subsequently worked on Great Expectations alongside Kathleen Chalfant in 2004 and participated in a 2009 workshop of Heathers: The Musical, playing Jason Dean. In July 2015, it was announced that Campbell would lead the cast of Harold Chapin's The New Morality at the Mint Theater in New York City.

On screen, Campbell made his television debut at age sixteen on the Canadian series Degrassi High. His first starring television role came in the movie City Boy, opposite James Brolin and Sarah Chalke, followed by the 1995 ABC telefilm Picture Perfect. That same year he moved to the United States and was cast as Teddy Delacourt in Aaron Spelling's primetime series Malibu Shores. Subsequent television work included a starring role in The $treet in 2000, voicing the protagonist Josh McGrath in the animated series Max Steel from 2000 to 2002, and joining All My Children as Bobby Warner from 2004 to 2005. He held a starring role in the NBC drama The Book of Daniel before its cancellation, appeared as a guest in CSI: Miami in May 2010, and took on a recurring role in the second season of HBO's True Detective. In 2013, he appeared alongside his sister Neve Campbell in the Lifetime film An Amish Murder, playing her character's brother. He also played the villain Pierce Peters in the 2015 Disney Channel Original Movie Bad Hair Day.

Campbell's film work includes the 1999 gay-themed romantic comedy Trick, in which he played Gabriel. The film received a Sundance Grand Jury Prize nomination and achieved the highest per-screen average gross for a gay-themed film at the time of its release. In 2001, he reteamed with Trick co-star John Paul Pitoc in Thank You, Good Night, which also featured Mark Hamill and Sally Kirkland. He appeared in the 2004 short film Pretty Dead Girl and starred in the 2009 horror feature Neighbor alongside America Olivo. He portrayed conservative political activist Ralph Reed in the 2010 film Casino Jack and starred opposite Amy Smart in Russell Friedenberg's 2014 feature Among Ravens.

Campbell met America Olivo on the set of Neighbor in 2009. They became engaged after two weeks and married on July 5, 2009, in a ceremony on Lake Como in Lombardy, Italy. Their first daughter was born in 2012 but died days later due to Edwards syndrome. The couple subsequently became spokespeople for the BabyQuest Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to assisting individuals and couples pursuing advanced fertility treatments. They had a second daughter in 2019. Campbell has also worked as a photographer for two decades, serves on the board of directors of the Players Club in New York City, and through his and Olivo's production company EsoteriCam Productions has produced and directed both the documentary concert series Live from Gramercy Park and the Broadway Dreams documentary series.
