About

Christopher Julius Rock was born on February 7, 1965, in Andrews, South Carolina, the eldest of seven children born to Rosalie (née Tingman), a teacher and social worker, and Julius Rock, a truck driver and newspaper deliveryman. Shortly after his birth, the family relocated to the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York, and later settled in the working-class area of Bedford–Stuyvesant. Rock was bused to schools in predominantly white Brooklyn neighborhoods, where he endured persistent bullying from white students. The situation worsened as he aged, and his parents eventually withdrew him from James Madison High School. He did not complete a traditional diploma but later earned a General Educational Development certificate. Before his entertainment career took hold, he worked at fast-food establishments including Red Lobster.

Rock began performing stand-up comedy in 1984 at New York City's Catch a Rising Star. Comedian Eddie Murphy, after seeing Rock perform at a nightclub, befriended and mentored him, and gave him his first film role in Beverly Hills Cop II in 1987. Rock subsequently appeared in I'm Gonna Git You Sucka in 1988 and had a role in the television series Miami Vice. He joined the cast of NBC's Saturday Night Live in 1990, where he remained until 1993 alongside fellow newcomers Chris Farley, Adam Sandler, Rob Schneider, and David Spade, a group that became known as the Bad Boys of SNL. During that period he appeared in New Jack City in 1991, playing a crack addict, and in the Eddie Murphy comedy Boomerang in 1992. He has since hosted SNL four times, in 1996, 2014, 2020, and 2024.

Following his departure from SNL, Rock wrote, produced, and starred in the low-budget comedy CB4 in 1993, which earned $18 million against a $6 million budget. His first HBO comedy special, Big Ass Jokes, aired in 1994, and his second, Bring the Pain in 1996, brought him mainstream stardom and two Emmy Awards. The HBO talk show The Chris Rock Show aired from 1997 to 2000, earning an Emmy for writing. Rock continued releasing stand-up specials, including Bigger and Blacker in 1999, Never Scared in 2004, Kill the Messenger in 2008, Tamborine in 2018, and Selective Outrage in 2023. Kill the Messenger earned him an additional Emmy for outstanding writing for a variety or music program. Across his television work, Rock has accumulated four Primetime Emmy Awards and three Grammy Awards for Best Comedy Album.

His film career expanded significantly in the late 1990s and into subsequent decades. Starring roles followed in Lethal Weapon 4 in 1998, Kevin Smith's Dogma in 1999, The Longest Yard in 2005, the Madagascar franchise from 2005 to 2012, I Think I Love My Wife in 2007, Grown Ups in 2010, Death at a Funeral in 2010, Top Five in 2014, The Week Of in 2018, Spiral in 2021, Amsterdam in 2022, and Rustin in 2023. He also received a Golden Globe Award nomination and appeared in television productions including Empire, Kevin Can Wait, and Fargo. From 2005 to 2009, Rock developed, wrote, produced, and narrated the sitcom Everybody Hates Chris, which was based on his early life. He hosted the Academy Awards in 2005 and 2016, and was assaulted by Will Smith at the 2022 ceremony in a widely covered incident. Comedy Central ranked Rock fifth on its list of the 100 Greatest Stand-ups of All Time, and Rolling Stone placed him fifth on its list of the 50 Best Stand-Up Comics of All Time.

Rock's Broadway career spans from 2007 to 2011. He appeared in The 24 Hour Plays in 2004 and made his Broadway debut in the 2011 Stephen Adly Guirgis play The Motherfucker with the Hat. That production earned him the Theatre World Lunt-Fontanne Award for Ensemble Excellence in 2011.

Rock's family history was examined on the PBS series African American Lives 2 in 2008. A DNA test conducted for the program revealed that he is of Cameroonian descent, specifically from the Udeme people of northern Cameroon. His great-great-grandfather, Julius Caesar Tingman, was enslaved for 21 years before serving in the American Civil War as part of the United States Colored Troops and was subsequently elected to two terms in the South Carolina House of Representatives. During the 1940s, Rock's paternal grandfather moved from South Carolina to New York City, where he worked as a taxicab driver and preacher. Rock's father, Julius, died in 1988 following ulcer surgery. Three of Rock's younger brothers, Tony, Kenny, and Jordan, are also active in the entertainment industry.
