About

Chilina Kennedy is a Canadian musical theatre actress and singer whose Broadway career has spanned from 2001 to 2024. Born in Oromocto, New Brunswick, she grew up in a military family, as her father served as an officer in the Canadian Forces. The family relocated frequently, living in various parts of Canada as well as England and Australia, before settling in Kingston, Ontario during Kennedy's high school years. She attended Kingston Collegiate and Vocational Institute, where she took part in musical productions including Anne of Green Gables and Bye Bye Birdie, and subsequently graduated from the musical theatre program at Sheridan College.

Kennedy's professional career began in 2000 when she was cast as Anne Shirley in the annual production of Anne of Green Gables at the Charlottetown Festival in Prince Edward Island, a role she reprised the following year. She then joined the first national tour of Mamma Mia!, starting as a member of the ensemble before eventually taking on the lead role of Sophie Sheridan. Her Stratford Festival debut came in 2005, when she played Agnes in Gypsy. She went on to appear in several additional Stratford productions, including West Side Story as Maria, Evita as Eva Perón, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum as Philia, and Kiss Me, Kate as Lois Lane/Bianca.

Kennedy first played Mary Magdalene in the Stratford Festival's 2011 production of Jesus Christ Superstar, which subsequently had a pre-Broadway engagement at the La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego. She made her Broadway debut in 2012 when she reprised the role in the revival at the Neil Simon Theatre. That same year, she originated the role of Phoebe D'Ysquith in the world premiere of A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder, which opened at Hartford Stage in October 2012 before also playing at the Old Globe Theatre.

In March 2015, Kennedy joined the Broadway production of Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, replacing Jessie Mueller in the title role. She performed as Carole King for over 1,200 performances across multiple stints in the production. In the summer of 2017, she stepped away from Broadway to headline a limited engagement of the show at the Ed Mirvish Theatre in Toronto, which ran from June 27 through September 3, 2017, before returning to the Broadway cast until 2018. Kennedy rejoined the Broadway production on January 3, 2019, took a further hiatus to perform the role on the national tour at the Toronto stop, then returned to Broadway once more before her final performance on June 9, 2019.

Kennedy starred as Dina in the first North American tour of The Band's Visit, appearing opposite Sasson Gabai. She later originated the role of Annie Lewis in Paradise Square, which had a pre-Broadway engagement at the Nederlander Theatre in Chicago in 2021 before transferring to the Ethel Barrymore Theatre on Broadway. In 2024, Kennedy stepped into the role of Myrtle Wilson in The Great Gatsby while Sara Chase was temporarily absent from the production on medical leave.

Beyond her stage performing work, Kennedy founded Eclipse Theatre Company in Toronto in 2018, with the goal of presenting new and re-imagined musicals. Early productions from the company included Kiss of the Spider Woman and Sunday in the Park with George. She has also been writing the music and lyrics for an original musical titled Wild About You, centered on a woman reconstructing her life with limited memory. A concept album for the project was released in 2023, featuring performances by Katharine McPhee, Alex Newell, Jenn Colella, Lea Salonga, Paul Alexander Nolan, Jessie Mueller, Joaquina Kalukango, and Kennedy herself. A concert staging was subsequently performed at Theatre Royal Drury Lane in England, with a cast that included Rachel Tucker, Eric McCormack, Tori Allen-Martin, and Oliver Tompsett. Industry presentations and workshops held in New York in October 2024 featured Jessica Vosk in the lead role.

Kennedy's other stage work includes starring as Billie Jean King in Love All, a play that premiered at the La Jolla Playhouse, and appearing as Cindy in the off-Broadway production of A Sign of the Times. She played Ms. Hopkins in the pre-Broadway engagement of Life After, which ran at the Ed Mirvish Theatre in Toronto from April 16 to May 10, 2025. In 2015, Kennedy released her debut album, What You Find in a Bottle, a collection of thirteen songs she had written over the preceding decade. In her personal life, Kennedy was married to Fenner Stewart in 2003, and the two divorced after a decade together. She has also been married to Jacob James, with whom she has a son named Henry.
