About
Chauncey Olcott, born John Chancellor Olcott on July 21, 1858, in Buffalo, New York, was an American stage actor, singer, songwriter, and book writer whose Broadway career extended from 1899 to 1920. Of Irish descent through his mother, Margaret (née Doyle), a native of Killeagh, County Cork, Olcott built a career centered on sentimental Irish-themed operettas and musicals, functioning simultaneously as tenor, actor, lyricist, and composer across some twenty productions.
Before establishing himself on Broadway, Olcott performed in minstrel shows in the early part of his career and traveled to London during the 1880s to study singing. Lillian Russell played a significant role in his rise to Broadway prominence. In 1893, producer Augustus Pitou recruited him to succeed William J. Scanlan as the leading tenor in Irish-themed operettas, a niche Olcott occupied for the rest of his performing life.
Among the productions for which Olcott wrote complete scores were Sweet Inniscara (1897), A Romance of Athlone (1899), Garrett O'Magh (1901), and Old Limerick Town (1902). For other works, he collaborated with composer Ernest R. Ball and lyricist George Graff, including Barry of Ballymore (1910), Macushla (1912), and The Isle o' Dreams (1913). His Broadway credits also include the plays Eileen Asthore and Edmund Burke. Several songs originating in his productions achieved broad popularity: "My Wild Irish Rose" came from A Romance of Athlone, "Mother Machree" from Barry of Ballymore, and "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling" from The Isle o' Dreams. For certain productions he drew on outside material, incorporating the title song of Macushla, composed by Dermot Macmurrough (the pseudonym of Harold R. White), and "Too Ra Loo Ra Loo Ral" by James Royce Shannon for Shameen Dhu (1914). His songwriting drew on melodic and rhythmic elements from traditional Irish music combined with melancholy sentiment, qualities that resonated with Irish-American audiences.
A serious illness in 1925 ended Olcott's performing career and prompted his relocation to Monte Carlo, where he died of pernicious anemia on March 18, 1932. His remains were returned to the United States and interred at Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx, New York City. In 1947, Warner Bros. released My Wild Irish Rose, a film account of his life starring Dennis Morgan, based on the biography Song in His Heart (1939) written by his widow, Rita Olcott. In 1970, Olcott was posthumously inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
