About
Charlotte Rae Lubotsky was born on April 22, 1926, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to Esther (née Ottenstein) and Meyer Lubotsky, Russian Jewish immigrants. Her father owned a retail tire business, and for the first decade of her life the family lived in an apartment above his Milwaukee store before relocating to nearby Shorewood, Wisconsin, in 1936. Rae was the second of three sisters, between Beverly and Miriam. Her mother had been childhood friends with Israeli prime minister Golda Meir. Rae graduated from Shorewood High School in 1944 and went on to attend Northwestern University, where she crossed paths with a number of then-unknown figures including Cloris Leachman, Charlton Heston, Paul Lynde, Agnes Nixon, Claude Akins, and songwriter Sheldon Harnick. She did not complete her degree, and at the suggestion of a radio personality she dropped her surname Lubotsky — a decision her father did not welcome — and began performing as Charlotte Rae.
Rae's Broadway career extended from 1952 to 1988, encompassing a wide range of productions. She starred in Li'l Abner, Threepenny Opera, and Into the Woods, and also appeared in The Golden Apple, Boom Boom, and The Chinese, among other productions. Her stage work earned her two Tony Award nominations: Best Featured Actress in a Musical in 1966 and Best Actress in a Play in 1969.
Her television career began in 1954 with appearances on Look Up and Live and The United States Steel Hour, which led to roles on Armstrong Circle Theatre, Kraft Television Theatre, The Philco Television Playhouse, The Colgate Comedy Hour, and The Phil Silvers Show, among others. Her first significant television success came with the sitcom Car 54, Where Are You? (1961–1963), in which she played Sylvia Schnauzer, wife of Officer Leo Schnauzer. She also appeared in season three of Sesame Street as Molly, the Mail Lady, and received an Emmy Award nomination for her supporting role in the 1975 drama Queen of the Stardust Ballroom. In January 1975, she joined the cast of Norman Lear's ABC comedy Hot l Baltimore, playing Mrs. Bellotti. She was also a regular on The Rich Little Show in 1976.
Her association with Lear led directly to her most celebrated television role. In 1978, Lear cast Rae as housekeeper Edna Garrett in NBC's Diff'rent Strokes, and she appeared in all 24 episodes of the first season alongside Conrad Bain. A 1979 episode titled "The Girls' School" depicted Mrs. Garrett assisting at a private school for girls, and Rae subsequently proposed a spinoff built around that premise. NBC approved the series, titled The Facts of Life, which premiered in 1979. After a restructuring that included cast changes and a time-slot shift for its second season, the show became a consistent ratings success through 1986. In 1982, Rae received a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Best Actress in a Comedy Series for her portrayal of Edna Garrett. She also reprised the role in two television films: The Facts of Life Goes to Paris in 1982 and The Facts of Life Reunion in 2001. Rae departed the series at the end of the 1985–86 season, with her exit written as Mrs. Garrett's marriage and subsequent move to Africa to work in the Peace Corps. Her longtime friend Cloris Leachman, whom she had first met at Northwestern University, succeeded her in the cast for the show's final two seasons.
Beyond her work on The Facts of Life, Rae contributed voice performances to animated projects, including the character of Nanny in 101 Dalmatians: The Series and Aunt Pristine Figg in Tom and Jerry: The Movie. She appeared as Gammy Hart in the Disney Channel series Girl Meets World and returned to feature film in 2015 with a role in Ricki and the Flash, alongside Meryl Streep, Kevin Kline, and Rick Springfield. That same year, she published her autobiography, The Facts of My Life, co-written with her son Larry Strauss. Charlotte Rae died on August 5, 2018, having sustained a performing career of sixty-six years across Broadway, television, and film.
