About
Charlotte Ives Boissevain (November 27, 1886 – September 1976) was an American actress who worked in both Broadway theater and silent films during the early twentieth century. Born Charlotte Danziger in Boston, Massachusetts, she was the daughter of Charles Danziger and Leah Cohen Danziger, whose mother had been born in Hungary and died in 1904. Ives had two sisters, Helen I. Maltby and Augusta Hartley.
Danziger began her acting career under her birth name in 1909, working as a protégée of Eleanor Robson. She soon adopted the stage name Charlotte Ives, which she used both professionally and personally for the remainder of her life. Her Broadway and touring career spanned from 1910 to 1925 and included productions such as The Upstart and The Turning Point, both in 1910, followed by As a Man Thinks in 1911 and Passers-by in 1912. She continued with Liberty Hall in 1913, and in 1914 appeared in A Woman Killed with Kindness, A Scrap of Paper, and The High Cost of Loving. Later stage credits included The Brat and What's Your Husband Doing?, both in 1917, The Man Who Stayed Home in 1918, and She Had to Know in 1925.
Alongside her theater work, Ives appeared in a number of silent films. Her screen credits included Clothes in 1914, The Dictator in 1915, A Prince in a Pawnshop in 1916, The Man of Mystery and The Warfare of the Flesh in 1917, and both Prince Cosimo and The Splendid Romance in 1919.
In her personal life, Ives was engaged to opera singer Antonio Scotti in 1912. She later married Dutch-born importer Jan M. Boissevain in 1921, acquiring Dutch citizenship upon marriage. Her brother-in-law, Eugen Boissevain, was married first to suffragist Inez Milholland and later to poet Edna St. Vincent Millay. In 1940, Ives petitioned for the restoration of her American citizenship under the provisions of the Cable Act of 1922. In her later years she lived in Cap d'Antibes, France, where she was close to fellow American actress Maxine Elliott. Her husband died in 1964, and Ives died in France in September 1976 at the age of 90. A photograph of her taken by Carl Van Vechten in 1943 is held in the New York Public Library Digital Collections.
