About
Charlotte Granville (née Stuart; 9 May 1860 – 8 July 1942) was a British actress born in London, England, whose career spanned stage and screen across several decades. She accumulated Broadway credits between 1910 and 1934 and maintained a parallel film career from 1917 to 1936.
Granville began her stage work in Dublin, performing with a company led by George Alexander. Her Broadway debut came in 1910 with Mr. Preedy and the Countess, launching a stage career in New York that would extend across more than two decades. Among her Broadway productions were Berlin, The Roof, Here Today, The Great Magoo, and A Divine Moment, the last of which marked her final Broadway appearance in 1934, in the role of Miss Attica Taylor.
Her screen work began with The Red Woman in 1917, and she went on to appear in a substantial number of films over the following two decades. Her early film roles included Mrs. Bredwell in The Antics of Ann, Mrs. Trailes in A Square Deal, and Mrs. Mason in The Floor Below. She continued working in film into the 1930s, taking on roles in productions such as 24 Hours, Just a Gigolo, Now and Forever, and Rose of the Rancho. She is particularly noted for her appearance as Lady Forsythe in the 1935 horror film Werewolf of London.
In her personal life, Granville married Major Robert Follett Muter Foster Millington Synge in September 1884. She filed for divorce from him in London on 26 April 1900. Granville died on 8 July 1942 in Los Angeles at the age of 82.
