About

Charlotte Clasis (1891–1974) was a French actress whose career spanned theatre and film across several decades. Born in the late nineteenth century, she worked in both stage and screen contexts, earning credits on both sides of the Atlantic.

Early in her professional life, Clasis served as a model for the painter Auguste Renoir. That connection to the Renoir family extended into her film work, as the painter's son, director Jean Renoir, cast her in two of his productions. Her first collaboration with Jean Renoir came in the 1925 silent film The Whirlpool of Fate, and the two worked together again more than a decade later on The Human Beast in 1938.

Clasis made her Broadway appearance in 1924, performing in L'Homme qui Assassina. The engagement placed her among the French-language theatrical productions that occasionally reached New York stages during that era.

Her film career extended from the silent period through the early 1950s. Among her screen appearances were Black and White (1931), Sapho (1934), I Have an Idea (1934), The Happy Road (1936), Woman of Malacca (1937), My Little Marquise (1937), The Marvelous Night (1940), The Beautiful Adventure (1942), Promise to a Stranger (1942), The Murderer is Afraid at Night (1942), Twilight (1944), Minne (1950), and Her Last Christmas (1952).
