About
Charlie Stemp is an English actor born on 30 November 1993 in Peckham, London. He trained at the Belcanto London Academy Theatre School before completing a three-year program at Laine Theatre Arts in Epsom.
Following his graduation, Stemp built his early career in the West End, performing in Wicked and taking on the role of Eddie in the international tour of Mamma Mia!. He also appeared in the film Knarcolepsy. His profile rose significantly when he was cast as Arthur Kipps in Sir Cameron Mackintosh's production of Half a Sixpence, written by Julian Fellowes. The production began at Chichester Festival Theatre between July and September 2016 before transferring to the Noël Coward Theatre in the West End in October 2016, where it ran through 2 September 2017. The role earned Stemp the WhatsOnStage Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical and a nomination for the 2017 Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical. In 2021, Fellowes reworked the piece under the title Kipps for Sky Arts, with Stemp returning to the title role.
Stemp made his Broadway debut in the revival of Hello, Dolly!, beginning performances on 20 January 2018 and opening officially on 22 February 2018. He played Barnaby Tucker, taking over the role from Taylor Trensch. The production closed on 25 August 2018. For his Broadway work, Stemp received a Theatre World Award in 2018.
Back in the West End, Stemp played Bert opposite Zizi Strallen in the title role of a revival of Mary Poppins at the Prince Edward Theatre. In 2022, he was cast as Bobby Child in Chichester Festival Theatre's production of Crazy for You, which transferred to the Gillian Lynne Theatre in 2023. That same year, Stemp performed at the Royal Variety Show. He subsequently starred as Bill Calhoun in a West End revival of Kiss Me, Kate at the Barbican Centre, appearing alongside Stephanie J. Block and Adrian Dunbar, with the production running from 4 June to 14 September 2024.
Most recently, Stemp portrayed Alan-a-Dale in the London Palladium's 2024–2025 pantomime production of Robin Hood, which ran from 7 December 2024 to 12 January 2025. The cast included Julian Clary as Robin Hood, Jane McDonald as Maid Marion, Marisha Wallace as the Sheriff of Nottingham, Nigel Havers as Friar Tuck, Paul Zerdin as Will Scarlet, Rob Madge as the Spirit of Sherwood, and Tosh Wanogho-Maud as Little John. Outside of performing, Stemp is also a keen football and rugby player.
