About
Charlie Faulkner Plummer is an American actor born on May 24, 1999, in Poughkeepsie, New York, to theatre actress Maia Guest and writer-producer John Christian Plummer. He grew up in Cold Spring and has a younger brother, James. Because both of his parents worked in theatre, Plummer was introduced to acting at an early age, participating in local stage productions of plays and musicals, an experience he credits with igniting his passion for the craft. Despite being shy as a child, he sought professional representation at the age of ten. His family relocated frequently for work, leading him to attend seven schools across Los Angeles, upstate New York, and New York City. The demands of his television schedule eventually prompted him to enroll at the Professional Children's School in Manhattan.
Plummer made his Broadway appearance in 2011 in A Christmas Story The Musical. That same year, he began a recurring role on HBO's period drama Boardwalk Empire, portraying Eli Thompson's son Michael across seasons two, three, and four, appearing in eight episodes during his first year on the series. He also appeared in the short films Frank (2010), Three Things (2011), and Alan Smithee (2012) during this period. In 2013, he joined the BYUtv drama series Granite Flats as lead character Timmy Sanders, starring in all 24 episodes across three seasons, which concluded in 2015 after premiering on Netflix.
Plummer made his feature film debut in David Chase's drama Not Fade Away, released by Paramount Vantage on December 21, 2012. In 2015, he took the lead role of Jack in Felix Thompson's directorial debut King Jack, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival. His profile rose considerably in 2017 when he played the kidnapped heir John Paul Getty III in Ridley Scott's crime thriller All the Money in the World, released on December 25 of that year. Also in 2017, he co-starred in Oren Moverman's drama thriller The Dinner, released on May 5.
That same year, Plummer portrayed Charley, a troubled teenager who forms a bond with a racehorse, in Andrew Haigh's drama Lean on Pete. He pursued the role by writing a letter directly to Haigh expressing his connection to the story. The film premiered at the Venice International Film Festival, where his performance earned him the Marcello Mastroianni Award for best emerging actor. In 2019, he starred as 16-year-old Miles "Pudge" Halter in Hulu's miniseries adaptation of John Green's novel Looking for Alaska, a performance that drew critical acclaim. In 2022, he portrayed a young Franklin D. Roosevelt in the Showtime series The First Lady.
Among his other film credits, Plummer starred in Joshua Leonard's Dark Was the Night and Duncan Skiles's The Clovehitch Killer, both in 2018, followed by Nabil Elderkin's Gully and Pippa Bianco's A24-produced Share in 2019. In 2020, he headlined Thor Freudenthal's Words on Bathroom Walls, playing a young man diagnosed with schizophrenia, and starred in Brian Duffield's dark comedy Spontaneous, based on Aaron Starmer's novel of the same name. In 2023, he starred as Dylan in Luke Gilford's National Anthem, which premiered at the SXSW Festival. Plummer lives in New York City and is a vegetarian.
