About
Charlie Carver, born Charles Carver Martensen on July 31, 1988, in San Francisco, California, is an American actor and writer. His identical twin brother, Max Carver, was born seven minutes later, on August 1. The brothers were raised by their mother, Anne Carver, a philanthropist and community activist, and their stepfather, Denis Sutro, who relocated the family to Calistoga in Napa Valley in 1992. Their father, Robert Martensen, was a physician, historian, and author. Carver attended St. Paul's School in Concord, New Hampshire, before transferring to Interlochen Arts Academy in Interlochen, Michigan. He later graduated from the University of Southern California in 2012 and also studied acting at the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco. Carver's first performance came as a middle schooler, when he played Puck in a school production of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. His professional screen debut came alongside his brother on the ABC series Desperate Housewives, where the two played Porter and Preston Scavo, sons of Lynette and Tom Scavo; Carver held the role from 2008 to 2012. The brothers subsequently appeared together on the MTV series Teen Wolf, with Carver portraying Ethan Steiner, one half of a pair of twin alpha werewolves, from 2013 to 2014, and returning again in 2017. Both brothers also appeared in the first season of HBO's The Leftovers in 2014, with Carver playing Scott Frost. His additional television credits include guest appearances on Hawaii Five-0 and The League, as well as a role in the 2017 ABC miniseries When We Rise, which traced the history of the LGBTQ rights movement from the Stonewall riots of 1969 onward. Carver himself came out as gay on Instagram in 2016. His feature film work has included Underdogs, Bad Asses, and I Am Michael.
Carver made his Broadway debut in 2018, playing Cowboy in the revival of Mart Crowley's The Boys in the Band. He reprised the role in the 2020 film adaptation, which featured a cast that included Jim Parsons, Zachary Quinto, Matt Bomer, Andrew Rannells, Robin de Jesús, Tuc Watkins, and Michael Benjamin Washington. In September 2020, he appeared in the Netflix drama series Ratched. In 2022, Carver starred in American Horror Story: NYC and co-wrote four episodes of the season.
