About
Charles Seel (April 29, 1897 – April 19, 1980) was an American actor born in the Bronx, New York, who built a career spanning stage, radio, film, and television across several decades. He is also credited in some productions under the names Charles Seal and Charles F. Seel.
Seel's earliest connection to the entertainment industry came through work as a handyman at Biograph Studios. He subsequently pursued a performing career in vaudeville before transitioning to Broadway, where he appeared in the 1928 play Killers. Stage work gave way to radio, and in 1937 he relocated to Hollywood to pursue work in film and television.
His film career extended from 1938 to 1974, encompassing more than thirty screen appearances. Among his notable film roles was that of the old man in the 1971 Steven Spielberg television film Duel. His final theatrical film credit was Airport 1975, in which he portrayed a passenger celebrating an anniversary.
Television occupied the largest portion of Seel's later career, with more than one hundred appearances between 1952 and 1974. He recurred as Otis across five episodes of Tombstone Territory between 1957 and 1958, and portrayed Doc Miller in two episodes of The Deputy in 1960. As newspaper editor Mr. Krinkie, he appeared in nine episodes of Dennis the Menace from 1959 to 1963. His longest-running television association was with Gunsmoke, on which he played Barney Danches in ten episodes between 1965 and 1972. He also portrayed Tom Pride in all twenty-nine episodes of The Road West during its 1966–1967 run. Additional television credits include appearances on The Twilight Zone, Star Trek, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, The Alfred Hitchcock Hour, and The Rifleman. His final television appearance came on December 22, 1974, in the Christmas Party episode of Apple's Way, in which he played a character named MacPherson.
Seel died in Los Angeles on April 19, 1980, ten days before what would have been his eighty-third birthday. He was buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Hollywood Hills.
