About
Charles Repole is an American actor, theater director, and college professor whose Broadway career spans from 1975 to 1985. He made his Broadway debut in the musical Very Good Eddie in 1975, a performance that earned him both a Theatre World Award and a Tony Award nomination. His additional Broadway acting credits include the 1979 revival of Whoopee!, which brought him a Drama Desk Award nomination, and Doubles in 1985. Repole also appeared in V.I.P. Night on Broadway during this period.
Beyond performing, Repole has built an extensive career as a director, working across Broadway, the Kennedy Center, Carnegie Hall, and regional theaters throughout the country. He directed Gentlemen Prefer Blondes on Broadway in 1995. For the New York City Center Encores! series, he helmed concert productions of DuBarry Was a Lady, featuring Faith Prince and Robert Morse, and Call Me Madam, starring Tyne Daly. His regional directing credits include George M! with Joel Grey, Zorba with Anthony Quinn, Annie with Rue McClanahan, The Solid Gold Cadillac with Charlotte Rae, a musical version of Animal Crackers at the Goodspeed Opera House, Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera's 50th Anniversary production of My Fair Lady, and a 1996 Paper Mill Playhouse production of Cole Porter's You Never Know. His direction of A Day in Hollywood/A Night in the Ukraine in Chicago earned him a Joseph Jefferson Award nomination.
Since 1999, Repole has conceived and directed the annual fundraising gala for the 92nd Street Y, a series that has featured performers including Angela Lansbury, Carol Channing, Elaine Stritch, Bebe Neuwirth, Jerry Herman, Alvin Ailey, and Martha Graham. He has also conceived and directed the MAC Awards.
Repole serves as Chairperson of the Drama, Theatre, and Dance Department at Queens College in Flushing, New York, where he teaches Acting, Directing, and Musical Theatre Workshop. He has directed numerous main stage productions at the college, among them Bus Stop, Carousel, Guys and Dolls, and Aaron Copland's opera The Tender Land.
