About

Charles Quigley (February 12, 1906 – August 5, 1964) was an American actor born in New Britain, Connecticut, whose career spanned stage, film, and television. His father, Charles P. Quigley, worked as a sales manager for a hardware business. After graduating from New Britain High School in 1924, Quigley pursued formal training at the Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York.

Before reaching Broadway, Quigley built his stage foundation through regional and touring work. He spent a year with a stock theater company in Portland, Maine, and subsequently joined a touring production of Expressing Willie. He then took on the role of Christian in a production of Cyrano de Bergerac, a part he held for a year, and went on to serve as Ethel Barrymore's leading man for two years.

Quigley's Broadway career ran from 1927 to 1934 and encompassed more than a dozen productions. His earliest credit was Arabian Nightmare in 1927, followed by The Light of Asia, Caponsacchi, and Cyrano de Bergerac, all in 1928. That same year he married Harriet Blue; the couple had a son. In 1929 he appeared in both Diana and The Bonds of Interest. Quigley then took the role in Scarlet Sister Mary in 1930, and later returned to Broadway with Her Tin Soldier and The World Waits, both in 1933, before closing his stage career with False Dreams, Farewell in 1934.

In Hollywood, Quigley became a familiar presence in serials and genre films. He appeared opposite Rita Hayworth in multiple pictures, including Convicted, Special Inspector, Girls Can Play, and The Shadow. He also appeared alongside Joan Crawford in A Woman's Face. Among his serial work, Quigley starred in The Crimson Ghost and appeared in the 1948 serial version of Superman. His final screen performance came in Tokyo After Dark in 1959. He also made several television appearances during the 1950s.

Quigley died on August 5, 1964, in Los Angeles at the age of 58.
