About
Charles Macaulay (September 26, 1927 – August 13, 1999) was an American actor and director born and raised in Kentucky. He received his formal training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, where upon graduation he earned the First Judges Medal along with notes of congratulation from John Gielgud and John Mills for his performance in The Heiress.
Macaulay made his first New York appearance in 1952 in The Sacred Flame by W. Somerset Maugham. He subsequently built a substantial stage career on the East Coast, accumulating credits across six off-Broadway productions and seven Broadway productions, including appearances at Barter Theatre opposite Judith Anderson. His Broadway work spanned 1955 to 1957 and included The Duchess of Malfi and The Dark Is Light Enough. Additional stage credits included Man and Superman, The Winslow Boy, and Bell, Book and Candle. He also performed Shakespeare, playing Benedick in Much Ado About Nothing and the title role in Macbeth at the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego.
During the same period, Macaulay appeared in live television productions including Armstrong Circle Theatre and Studio One. He later took on recurring roles in the Perry Mason television film series, first as a judge and subsequently as District Attorney Markham. He was a personal friend of Raymond Burr and served as an administrator of Burr's estate. His television work also included appearances on Star Trek, Mission: Impossible, Gunsmoke, Airport 77, Baa Baa Black Sheep, and Columbo.
From 1986 to 1992, Macaulay taught at the USC School of Theatre, where he directed six student productions. He died of cancer in Sonoma County in 1999 at the age of 72.
