Charles K. French, born Charles Ekrauss French or Charles E. Krauss on January 17, 1860, in Columbus, Ohio, was an American performer whose career spanned both the Broadway stage and the silent film era. He graduated from Columbus High School and went on to build a multifaceted career as an actor, screenwriter, and director.
French's stage career brought him to Broadway between 1899 and 1905, where he appeared in several productions. His credits included the drama Nancy Stair, the musical The Girl from Dixie, and We'Uns of Tennessee. Following his years on the stage, French transitioned to film, making his screen debut in Davy Crockett in 1906. He went on to appear in more than 240 films between 1909 and 1945, establishing himself as a prolific presence in early American cinema.
Beyond acting, French contributed to the film industry as both a writer and director. He directed Romance of a Fishermaid and Charmed, I'm Sure, both in 1909, as well as Thoughts of Tonight in 1915. His screenwriting credits included Romance of a Fishermaid and Davy Crockett – In Hearts United, both from 1909. French was married to Isabelle Gurton. He died on August 2, 1952, having lived to the age of 92.
