About
Charles Judels (August 17, 1882 – February 14, 1969) was a Dutch-born American actor whose career spanned Broadway, film, and voice work across several decades. Born in Amsterdam, Netherlands, he came from a theatrical family extending back three generations. His grandfather owned multiple theatres throughout the Netherlands and performed in his own plays, while his father channeled a combined passion for theatre and music into a 35-year tenure as stage manager for the Metropolitan Opera in New York.
Judels made his Broadway debut in 1902 and continued performing on stage through 1947. His theatrical credits included the play Louisiana, the musicals Wildflower, For Goodness Sake, and Head Over Heels, as well as the production Mary, Mary, among other appearances. In 1909, he became a member of The Lambs, the prominent theatrical club.
Alongside his stage work, Judels built an extensive screen career, appearing in more than 130 films between 1915 and 1949. In 1928, he was signed by 20th Century Fox to direct Movietone productions. He also performed substantial work as a voice actor in animated films, most notably providing the voices of both Stromboli and the Coachman in Walt Disney's Pinocchio in 1940.
Judels died in San Francisco, California on February 14, 1969, at the age of 86.
