About

Edward Charles Herring, born around 1843 in England and known professionally as Charles Harbury, was a stage actor whose Broadway career extended from 1899 to 1922. He worked primarily in supporting and character roles across a wide range of productions throughout that period.

Harbury built his career appearing alongside some of the most prominent theatrical figures of his era. His stage work brought him into productions featuring E. H. Sothern, Virginia Harned, Ethel Barrymore, and Mrs. Fiske. Among his earlier credits was The Manoeuvres of Jane during the 1899–1900 season, which starred Mary Mannering, followed by When Knighthood Was in Flower in 1901 with Julia Marlowe. In 1904 he appeared in Sunday alongside Ethel Barrymore, and in 1908 he took part in The World and His Wife.

His Broadway work continued into the following decade. He appeared in Mrs. Bumpstead-Leigh in 1911, a production starring Mrs. Fiske, and in 1912 he had credits in both The Return from Jerusalem and Oliver Twist, the latter featuring Marie Doro and Constance Collier. Three Faces East followed in 1918, and in the early 1920s Harbury appeared in Launcelot and Elaine and The Merchant of Venice, the 1922–23 production of which starred David Warfield. Additional Broadway credits from this period include What Happened to Jones and The Fugitive.

Harbury died in 1928 in upstate New York. He was buried in a charity plot at Kensico Cemetery.
